Jack build European material

#1 Post by Jean Mi » Thu Apr 08, 2021 2:28 pm

Hey,

I am starting to build my frist jack 10. In located in France.

First I have a question about plywood tickness : in Bill's doc, he asks to use 1/2 inche = 12 mm plywood. With the lockdown we have here, I have difficulties to get some, but in my own stock 15 mm tick one -> Is it a big issue to use 15 mm instead 12 mm plywood to build the jack 10 ?

Second question : Tweeter Piezo : are the Monacor MPT-016 EU twin of the Goldwood piezos, model 1016 ?

Thrid question : Filters LP and HP , I do not find inductance with exact bill's recommandation ; can I change 0.5mH to 0.47 mH and the 0.6mH one to 0.56 mH (I cannot find the calculation of the filters in the doc)

Last point : insulation : I have in stock Thinsulate TC1803 30 mm tick (datasheet : https://docs.rs-online.com/e112/0900766b81422155.pdf) can I use it or insulation ?

Hi Jean Mi and welcome!

Re 15mm:
Your cab will become 20-25% heavier, you may be sorry every time you move it. Other than that, it should work if and only if you keep ALL inner dimensions the same. This may require some math/drawing skills. Is there also no 12mm poplar ply in 12mm over there? It is sold in stores here (Netherlands).

Re piezos:
I think the Monacor should work fine. If they get very expensive it may become worth while to ask Leland for a quote of a box of piezos shipped to you (search forum member Leland Crooks, owner of https://www.speakerhardware.com ) . I am in Europe too and several years ago I needed several items that were hard to get here. Since I was ordering from him anyway, I included a good number of piezos in my order. Worked for me, may depend on how much hardware you need. He is a great guy and deserves our business.

Re inductance:
I believe you should be fine up to about 10% tolerance. Confirmation from Bill is welcome.

Re insulation:
I don't know that material. First impression is OK to me but not sure. Does your local supplier of building materials have egg crate foam? E.g. Leroy Merlin, Bricomarche, Mr Bricolage etc. Over here it is quiet common and not overly expensive. Typically sold in pieces of about 100x50cm.

Salut Jean,
Have you looked at the Jacklite? Perhaps 1/4 inch = 6mm plywood is easier to find?

As for the insulation it's fine, but I wouldn't pay a premium price for it.

Thanks for the quick feedback

Regarding plywood, I will wait. In fact it is possible to find 12 mm but just during next weeks it is not possible due to the lockout ( :cop: ) I maybe train to my wood machining skills with the 15 mm then do the real job in few weeks with 12 mm one..
I do a quick calculation and 3 mm on 1 square meeter of wood is approx 1.5 kg

-> Same for Jack Lite, seems to need to be more acurate in the cuts... I do not know how accurate I am. :D

tweeter I can get them for 4.3 € each so it's an accpetable price on my side (vs Deltalite II 2510 main driver price : 140 € :broke: )

I will post pictures when I will start.

See you

Hey Guys

Some news.

I start my Jack 10 builds. I find plywood 12 mm tick (I bought a 2.5 x 1.22 m for 40 €, but the quality was poor and the sheet delaminates ... fortunatly I can save half to build the jack)

For your info I found glue with same specs than loctite PL : Bostic "EXTERIEUR BOIS EXTERIEUR GEL" for 10€ the caridge (1 is enought for 1 build)
https://www.bostik.com/france/fr/catalo ... rieur-gel/

I also bought all hardwire (piezzo, filters and drivers on the website "https://www.toutlehautparleur.com/" they ship products also in Belgium, Germany and EU, price are nice, I get the Deltalite II 2510 for 140 € and the piezo Monacor MPT-016 for 3.8 € each)

For the build, I do not follow exactly the steps in the documentation cause I want to have inside my jack a matt black paint. So I cut all parts then on the visible area I apply wood past and after sanding primary paint, then sanding and then black paint. (I think it was easyer to sand and paint just wood cuts)

I also first assembly Throat reflectors before assembly top and bottom same for Driver Spacer and Phase plug extension. I aslo add wood paste to have a perf join between baffle and phase plugs (I aslo have a jigsaw problem for one of the circle quater)

So it is almost finish

I have a question about the handles ? can I open the side to make the handle or the side have to be tight ?

I add some pics.

Don't open the sides. The Otops have handles that are open on the sides that serve as ports, but not the Jacks. Either use a surface mount handle, like the standard spring mount type which you can recess, or build a inner box to keep the sides tight.
Can't wait to get a review from you when the cabs are done.

Hey guys

I move on the build, I use 4 tweeters and I fix them with screws. I use rigid 1.5² section cable to wire them together (With rigid wires it is easier to weld cause wires do not move)

I also start the filters. I can see the capacity I have (15 mu F) is only 35V (instead 400 Vfor the 5.6 mu F) -> Can I use it ? (I do not find in power amps what is the voltage given to the drivers)

Here some pics

Without seeing it I don't know what you have for a 15uF cap, but the minimum allowable is 50v.

To calculate Watts from Volts: Volts times Volts divided by Ohms equals Watts

To calculate Volts from Watts: The square root of the product of Watts times Ohms equals Volts

That cap is OK for home stereo speakers but it won't handle pro-sound use.

It is what I thought when I saw them and the tinny size VS the 5.7 muF (which is MKP 400VDC)

I will buy the same type than 5.7 muF: 15 muF MKP up to 400VDC (I think it is close to 200 VAC)
