Helpful hints on how to build 'em, and where to get the stuff you need.

Best way to fill holes (larger than screw holes)

#1 Post by tvent »

We have a 2" hole in the bottom of our Jack 15's that was used for the pole mount but we'd like to relocate it. (We originally placed the pole mount at what we found to be the center of gravity (front to back) but it looks so strange on the pole we think we'd be better to center it.

What is the best way to fill this hole?

Can I just put a backer-board on the inside and fill it full of PL, the scrape/sand/Bondo after it dries?

We need to do the same thing with some holes for some speakons that we'd like to relocate on some WH10's. I ran them out the sides at build time thinking that would be best for daisy-chaining on stages, but people are always stepping on the speakon cables which puts a LOT of stress on the speakon jack, plug, and the wood it is mounted to. For this reason, we'd like to just run them straight out the back. (Our WH8's are set up with the speakons out the back and we've never had an issue with them - the only caveat is that you have to have double the speakons if you want to have the flexibility of both angles of placement of the WH's.)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tim

I'd PL an appropriate size/shape piece of ply in the hole, screwed/held in place with a piece of scrap wrapped in wax paper, until the PL cures. Then sand. fill, paint
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's

I'd definitely glue an oversized backer in the cab, (1/4" Baltic plywood) to provide strength to the patch. Without that, you'd be depending on the glued edge of your patch alone to keep it in place. Then glue in a piece of plywood to fit the hole and fill it around with bondo or PL.

2xT30 (21", 3012LF)
4xOtop J-array (Beta12, melded/straight piezos)
Truck Tuba (MCM)
Next up: 2xJack12 or family of table tubas

Thanks for the advice guys.

I combined the advice and put the small backer board inside the cab behind each unwanted hole.
For the 2" hole, I cut some slightly smaller circles with a hole saw.
For the speakons, I just used the backer board and PL. Seems sufficient.
I used a pull-saw to trim the excess PL at the exterior of the cab - that worked very well.

I'll be filling, sanding, and hopefully touching up the Duratex this evening.

Thanks again!
Tim
