I recently ordered the recommended Dayton RSS390 HF-4 for my first THT build. I've read everything I could find about the break-in procedure, but still had a couple questions.
What breaks in the driver best is the longest possible excursion with the lowest possible input voltage - Bill Fitzmaurice
For the RSS390 HF-4 driver.... Excursion peaks at about 22-23Hz, dropping below and above that. - Bill Fitzmaurice
I can download a 22 hz test tone. My questions center around what voltage to drive at. I've heard some people recommend "turn up the volume until you just reach peak excursion"... which in the case of the Dayton is 14mm xmax. How do I know I'm reaching xmax?
I also read a thread where Bill indicated that a full 28v could be used (even at 22hz) without damaging the sub. I'm assuming this is referring to an RMS value read from a voltmeter?... and the peak voltage would therefore be SQRT(2) or ~1.41x higher (39.5 volts)!?
If it doesn't take 28v to reach xmax, then it sounds like this isn't necessary & should be avoided?
Is there a way to calculate the voltage that produces xmax?
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance for any advice!

Re: Woofer Burn In Question
If you have your plans handy:
25 - 30 Hz
10 volts
12 hours.

When mounted in the cabinet, not in free air. Always go by RMS, never peak. Peak is only useful in advertising.caleb105 wrote: I also read a thread where Bill indicated that a full 28v could be used (even at 22hz) without damaging the sub.
Apparently not Page 8 of the THT plans.I've read everything I could find about the break-in procedure,
Re: Woofer Burn In Question
Darn It! I tried so hard not to ask something that was in the plans... and I've already failed!
Thanks for the quick replies!

Don't beat yourself up about it.
There are bigger and better things to beat yourself up over.
Look at it this way: At least you knew where to ask!
