Why the BFM way?

#1 Post by ACUA »

I came here 2 years ago looking for: best bang for the buck, DIY or die, underground audio solutions and philosophy. I found it. What does that mean exactly.
Well today if I were to try to build on my own a portable sound system what would I do on my own. I would shop for gear and research right. I find these buyouts at a smoking price. They seem to be a great solution let’s model them best I can.

Next I would design an enclosure and if the combination suits my goals/needs then I’m done. I like the price and way that two of these subs models with my program.
This cabinet is pretty close to a tuba45 in its dimensions!!! It’s output aka spl and frequency is pretty similar to a tuba45 cab as well at least it models that way. The dual b-52 18” cab requires 1100w where the tuba45 needs 300w.

So I reckon I could build a single cabinet like pictured for about $250. If I want four $1000 and I would need 4400watts available. I can build a single tuba45 for $350-400. So for 4 tuba 45 cabs $1600. I bought my crown amp for $600 and it does 1200watts easily. I would need four of them to power the above proposed dual 18” loaded cabs so that would cost $1000for the subs plus $2400for the amp(s) totaling $3400 vs the BFM way costing a total of $2200, $1600 subs and $600 amp. That is $1200 less and requires 1/4 the power the BFM way, which is a big deal as a wall recepticle is only good for 1800watts arguably.

So even with crazy good buyout sale prices I still cant do as well as the BFM way on my own. What more is there to say. I just picked up an expensive little honda portable power inverter rated for 1800w and I can run my whole rig full tilt off it all night I could not say that if it were with my proposed b-52 subwoofer setup for more money!!!

You forgot to mention the sound quality too! There is no direct radiating sub out there that can touch the definition of a horn! Money aside, if you can't power the rig, you can't play. The ability to run a formidable rig off of 1 outlet is a godsend to a mobile operator as many times that is all you have to work with.
Built:
17" width 10" driver Autotuba
2 x 29" width dual Lab12 Tuba60
6 x DR250 2510/asd1001
In progress:
2 x DR250 2510/asd1001
For best results, point the loud end of the array towards the audience

For an 18" driver with decent specs, that's a great price. If this was 20 - 25 years ago, I would have seriously considered getting one or two of them for a bi-amped bass rig. With better cabinet designs and better light-weight neo drivers, I really don't see much need for drivers like this anymore. But a part of me still think it looks cool having a stack of massive cabinets behind you on stage. 😎

Every now and again I get bored and look into buying building audio equipment and always look for the best bang for the buck I can get. I try to see if when a deal pops up if I can justify buying something. Basically it happened with this thread. I saw the price and thought surly I can build some subs on the cheap. The deal still not beating the horns. I used to like to see the drivers too. The visual was appealing seeing many big woofers set up but I really feel snobbish lately about my sofisticated boutique-ish hipster out of the ordinary horns these days.

I agree, but not if you have a 2 way system where the woofer also has to play midrange as well. I prefer a direct radiator for that.

Jut so you're aware Chris, you're having a conversation with someone who (unfortunately) hasn't been active on the forum in over a year... and the original conversation took place over three years ago.

We love chatting about all that stuff, but it's much more effective to start a new thread of your own than it is to tag your opinion or question onto the end of a conversation that's been dead for so long.

Start all the new threads you like. Or if it's just random chit chat you're looking for, something not worthy of it's own thread, just put it in the What's to chat about? thread.

You are right! I did not see the age of this thread until I already posted.
