My kids (and me, kind of...) all climb at the local rock climbing gym here. Yesterday was their 20th anniversary event - competition, party, food, drink (supplied by one of our local microbreweries and a hard cider company!) They recently moved from a warehouse location to a retrofitted church in town. Very cool - bouldering in the old sanctuary, yoga studio in the chapel, weight room, team rooms, new construction for the high ropes area. My son "volunteered" me to run sound, so we hauled everything over Friday night to set up, and then ran for about 10 hours Saturday. Setup was not optimal by a long shot, but we made it work. The room is maybe 30 or 40 feet wide, at least double that long, and 45ft ceiling. Being a climbing gym, the walls all have slopes to them which probably helps. T30's v-plated out in the open, used as a table for my amp rack, mixer and a laptop. My two little JBL Control 28s on sticks to either side (OTop construction still underway). Actually sounded pretty dang good. Probably around 200 people in the main room. One of the best parts was having a mic for announcements, rules, etc. So many times at these kind of events you can't hear what's being said at all. This was clear and clean. And the Tubas are the bomb. Some one commented on how such little speakers (referring to the JBLs) could make such good loud music. So for a little demonstration, I pulled down the sub amp and the the sound just collapsed. Having a MASSIVE dose of 100HZ and below makes such a difference - you can feel it pound, but it doesn't have to rip your head off or make you yell into someone's ear to be heard. I can't wait to get my second pair built, although that would have been overkill. I didn't even push them near to their limit. Very pleased. I'll post some pics from my phone in a minute.
One weird thing on Friday night at set up. Got everything hooked up and...no low end at all. Checked and trouble shot for quite a while, ultimately was not getting signal from the input jack of the Tubas to the drivers. Was worried some critters tunneled in and ate my cones, so I pulled an access panel. Everything was fine. Pulled the jack next and checked continuity and all seemed okay, and then suddenly they worked. ??? I pulled the jack on the other tuba and played with the connections and then it started working too. I am wondering if there was a little corrosion on the Neutrik FASTons that was preventing the signal passing and when messing around pulling the jacks they made contact. I think will pull them all, clean them, reinstall and then hit with a little solder.

Ugh, I wish my climbing gym had a BFM soundsystem in there! I've contemplated letting them use mine semi-permanently but I need it in my workshop for loud music.
