Learn from this bad experience!

#1 Post by Carneoleon »

Not sure if I should post this here, yet here we go!

Friends of mine borrowed my OT12's and subwoofer with my NU12000DSP amplifier for carnival this year!
Installed them, and things were good. When I got them back, the guy told me: This speaker was making *plopping* noises (at day 1, before the party started), so we disconnected it.

Hmm, weird, both OT12's were on 1 channel, subwoofer on the other. How can 1 speaker sound weird while the other was perfect? (btw, they were all linked from one to the other with 4 pole speakons)

Back at home i find the Beta-12 was stuck and all the way back. No way to move it. Completely burned. Once again: weird, I limited at -8dB, so that should be no more than 270W peak, and the other was still perfect...

After further inspection I found the following: They managed to push in the Speakon cable up-side down, connecting full power of low frequency's, intended for the subwoofer, to the poor driver.

What I learned from this: either connect everything yourself and make sure no-one touches it again, or, make sure that even when the stuff get's connected the wrong way around, or wrong in any other way, nothing can break.

I'm suddenly very interested in the metal Speakon connectors neutrik makes.

Luckily the guys have no problem paying for the destroyed speaker.

It bears repeating: never loan out anything that you won't mind getting back broken.

Oh, wow. Good thing it wasn't the first speaker they wired wrong...you'd have lost both of em.

Of course, I usually use a hammer and channelock pliers to get my speakons to go in, so I understand how easy it is to get them in wrong... :wall:

They would've just found a bigger hammer. Good thing you didn't have some powercons laying around  .

The idea of the Speakon was to make connections idiot proof. The problem with that is God keeps making better idiots.

I hope you told them that a beta 12 is a very expensive driver!! :)

Carnival sucks! Beer and expensive hardware don't go together. We live in 's-Hertogenbosch, but we don't like carnival. We've learned from it too...

 Yeah, isn't a new Beta 12 about $1400 USD?

Check your AMP!!! That channel might be screwed as well. No point in destroying another driver. :wall:

Wow. Just wow. I have seen people force xlr connectors together where the plug and jack were misaligned and push the pins out through the back. I never thought about anyone trying to force speakons together. I will watch out for that now.

The only possible defence I can find for them is that the speakons are cheap china ones I bought when I was on a low budget. No idea if regular speakons are harder...

I did check the amp, it's fine :)
