A rare night out

#1 Post by racertomtom »

So, I quit the band about a year and a half ago and have been inactive. The band has this “awesome” JBL system but for some reason they begged and pleaded with me to run sound for an outdoor gig on my equipment. I reluctantly agreed and the show was last night.

I’ve got a simple rig, an analog Mackie 1604VLZ3 board, Lexicon reverb unit, DBX Drive rack PA, Tri amped Crown CTS amps. I ran 4 sub outs to a CTS 4200 4 channel amp to the 4-W8 monitors, my Behringer Ultra Curve bit the dust so this was straight in. Properly placed and outdoors I had no feedback issues. FOH is 2 - V plated 24” Lab 12 T39s, 2 – 3012HO/NSD2005 OT12s.

When I fired up some cell phone rock and roll, I was quickly reminded why the band wanted me to do sound. The cabinets lived in a band trailer of a very busy band for a couple of years and look ruff like they’ve been on a world tour. They don’t sound like it. I was using 13 channels for the band and running around 40 volts at nearly 0 db most of the night and practically every one walked by me and yelled “WOW”.

I think BF rigs are "awesome", not sure where that leaves the JBLs. Think I'll buy me some paint!

Many bands lack a decent PA. Without a major effort, and obviously with no investment, you could be renting out your services and gear for more than you'd make playing. Remember, even Clair Bros started off as a paying hobby.

OK, so I botched the I-phone recording but audio is the point here. This was a little loud in a 500 person club. Subs were v-plated wall loaded and much more prominent in person. People I trust used word like "full" and "clear"
