Re: Four DR200's Four T24's My Epic Jounry
You did it the right way for safety. Any other way leaves you vulnerable to someone else being able to blow your stuff up.
The way you have it set you have a lot of the headroom in the mixer being unused. This isn't necessarily a bad thing if it's quiet gear. If you feel like you could do with less noise when it's quiet then you could turn the amp down and reset your limiter. Not a great idea with kids around if you ask me.

Re: Four DR200's Four T24's My Epic Jounry
It's been a while since I have posted last and thought that I would review my four T24's again.
We had another large dance at the church last weekend and I decided to do some pre set up at home the night before.
As I was playing around with some of the settings I remembered that my Mixer has a "Zone" out, which acts just like another master out. I decided to run this line down to the 2nd input of one of the peavey CEX-l4a active crossovers and assign it to the band pas out. I set that channel's freq to accommodate the T-24's and also used the limiter on the CEX. This way I have control over my sub volume independent of the mains, on the fly, from the front of the main board. I can also monitor the sub channel via it's own VU meter and I can watch the limiter.
I have to thank Steve for taking my phone call right before the gig too. I have been trying to set my voltage limits with limited success. Turns out I have been doing it wrong. You need to measure the voltage from the amp with the speaker hooked up.
This hasn't been all bad, as I have been running about third power this whole time!
So let me tell you what, four T-24's running in mil. power is just brutal! This is what it's all about! Feeling the whole gym floor shake and feeling the bass hit you in the gut with all those screaming kids. They loved it! Got compliment after compliment! In fact one of my buddies said he could hear it outside in the parking lot, which really just made my night
Thanks Bill for your awesome designs!
No one who has done these dances in the past, can even come close to this rig. The kids know it and we keep getting more and more numbers to our dances because of it. Now the other leaders see this and we are going to pitch this to some of the larger, special dances that they have in Chicago (for our church).

They should definitely NOT be hooked up! Wow; a 60Hz sine wave at 50 volts through the speaker(s)...ouch. Makes my eyes pop out of their sockets just thinking about it. What was that movie where the guys head explodes?J_Dunavin wrote:You need to measure the voltage from the amp with the speaker hooked up..

Re: Four DR200's Four T24's My Epic Jounry
Then how am i supposed to measure?
PS i measured 28 Vac @60Hz before i stopped. There was no need to go all the way to 35. (bp102)

At the amps OUTPUTS, with nothing but the meter attached.J_Dunavin wrote:Then how am i supposed to measure?

Then why when I do I only measure 9 v with no load or speaker hooked up?
Not trying to be difficult. Just want to learn.

Re: Four DR200's Four T24's My Epic Jounry
Just what's in the way of the input to the amp? I go straight from the mixer to the limiter and then to the amp when setting limits.

Re: Four DR200's Four T24's My Epic Jounry
Board-eq-active crossover (with limiter) - amp.
No change in settings. Just with speaker can measure different than without. Without can not get rated output.
Guess I'll measure input next.

Re: Four DR200's Four T24's My Epic Jounry
uh....sorry....wrong and wrong. Voltage is voltage. The output of the amp doesn't care what's on the other end. The impedance of the speaker will determine the amount of watts - but we don't care about that - it's just the voltage that counts.J_Dunavin wrote:Board-eq-active crossover (with limiter) - amp.

Measuring the input will do nothing to save your drivers.

Re: Four DR200's Four T24's My Epic Jounry
Exactly. It probably sounded like there was no need. But, in the plans it also says you must protect from loud, quick transients (pops, cables unplugged improperly, mixer turned off before amps, etc).J_Dunavin wrote:Then how am i supposed to measure?

So, you get a signal, 60 Hz or whatever is recommended at the speaker terminals with a Volt meter only, that is OVER 35 watts and adjust your limiter down to 35 or less watts. Then to make sure, crank up some more volume (max the fader, increase the signal somehow) and if the volts stay the same 35 or less, then you can be assured you are good!

Re: Four DR200's Four T24's My Epic Jounry
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I am under the impression that the actual dB level of the test CD doesn't matter when setting limiters, the limiters engage depending on the signal out from the master volume, not depending on the gain of that actual channel... which makes the gain stage rather irrelevant as it's variable
