First public run - informal wedding DR200 pair-Titan48 pair

#1 Post by howiez » Mon Jun 20, 2022 6:48 am

So we had our friends wedding this past Saturday. We set up 10am for a 4pm dinner/reception.

Setup was one pair of DR200's with $22 budget 8" midbass and the melded array tweeters. Subs were one pair of Titan48's. Rack was filled with an ART PS4x4PROUSB power strip, DBX Driverack PA2, Crown XLS 1502 for tops and Crown XLS 2502 for subs. Fed signal to this with a laptop running Virtual DJ (my brother is more familiar with it than MIXX, and he'll assist at July wedding). We used a Focusrite Scarlet Solo external USB box to get our line level out to Driverack via RCA to XLR. We skipped our big knob as suggested in another thread.

This took place in a (i think) 40x80 steel pole shed on a concrete slab with barnboard/rough sawn pine covered interior and a maybe 20x20 stage/platform about 3ft up. Titans were side by side along short wall, DR200's on top. I ended up tilting one down since they were up so high on the platform. It was more than enough volume for the space. More than enough bass. We started at maybe the 9-o'clock position on the Scarlet Solo gain knob. It's typical 7/8 o'clock to or 4/5ish dial. We may have finished the night at half throttle as people danced.

I was able to do one RTA at 10am, part of our reason for early setup, but there was some background noise. Two catering setup people apparently like the 'whoop' of the frequency sweep and were walking in and out of the building mimicking like a myna bird. I ended up cutting the bass down 3db in two of the AutoEQ notches as it seemed a bit fat in the bottom end, but otherwise nice. It was crystal clear all the way up the shed and out the end garage door another 50feet. The main bar building was there so I couldn't' go further. It was also crystal clear out the side garage door and 50 feet into that parking lot. We received a lot of compliments, and certainly shock when they were told we built all of this from Bills plans in our own garage.

We did one war volume run just prior to getting shut down for the night. One family member wanted to really hear what it could do. A local band sound engineer I know uses Centipede by Knife Party to test setup his equipment, so he recommended a demo with that. We went right up against the limiters for that one song. I can say everyone in the room was blown away. I can't even imagine needing DR250s or 280s. That must be large outdoor spaces. Seems like a couple pairs of DR200's would kill any room indoors. And lets remember I'm running 150w cheapo drivers.

Already thinking I need to build a pair of T24's before my sons wedding in July. The Titans will for sure be overkill bass in that space. I have a feeling even one would be.

Thanks Bill for the great designs.

Thanks to all the rest of you for the priceless knowledge and expertise nudging me along.

This isn't an attempt to stop the build urge lol, but what will you do with the T24's after that?

As you said, even 1 x T48 might be to much. You've got a PA2. Just dial back the sub output until you get the response you desire...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" BP102 , 2 x 28" 3012lf.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

I advise everyone to not look that up. What a terrible song to play on such a nice setup. If you've heard 1 edm song, you've heard them all.

Well I'm glad it turned out great for you. I don't think you need to build a T24. Just turn the T48s down. FYI, RTA'ing in an empty room will be different then doing the same in a full room. Part of why bands do sound checks right before they go on (even though they already did earlier in the day).

Or, on a one-off deal like that - just turn down the amp that's driving the sub. But, I think you'll find that the balance of one T48 and the DRs will be fine - No system is ever too much when you have a volume control. (Yeah, I know - a really big system turned way, way down sounds like trash....but, that's not the case here).

As far as this wedding goes, what will the demographic be? Is it an older crowd, will it mostly be background music, i wonder if you can get by with just the mains since the gig is only a month away.

I find that they do that because they can't seem to get themselves to the gig on time.

I love my EDM, but I can only think of one place that song is suited for... a pinball machine. Wow.

That said... congrats on the successful gig Howie. And, thanks for the report! I love reading stuff like this.

Found 'em!

P.S. You have no idea how old I am. I just like music that takes actual talent to play.

'Struth
THIS HA HA HA

Not an EDM fan, but I like the sound Centipede makes (LOUD). But yeah, I won't be looking for any other dubstep or edm demo song LOL. Other new stuff, pop, like Rihanna has plenty of fat bass to impress. I guess old stuff is not mixed that way because who knew? The subharmonic synth helps a bit, but I hate having to turn it off for newer stuff. Or maybe I don't have a handle on compression yet? I need a master class on that. Otherwise I have no complaints with how my 70's, 80's and Hair Metal sounds on this rig! Actually my son is dying to hear Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin at war volume. Hope to do that this weekend in the garage LOL. I can say the long flute note at the beginning is killer on the DR's even before I had solid amps to back that up.

Really the too much bass comment, was on the stage. It was a node for sure, but out in the room it was well balanced. That's more about sub placement than anything. I really mean two refrigerator sized subs is too much LOL. If I had pack space, they are perfect. The Titans do what they are supposed to, loud, low and clean. Then never struggle or run out of breath. I can't say the same for any sealed, ported, or bandpass for that matter, that I've owned. J_Dunavin suggested some 15" wide T48's, and that might at least fit in the bed of my Avalanche. Pretty bad when I have a truck and rent a 4x8 U-Haul. Oh how I miss our Chevy Astro, that would haul all this gear with ease.

As for wedding demographic, it will be 100ish people, 8 kids, the rest adults 20 something to 94. I didn't expect much last weekend, but as soon as the liquid courage flows, the booty shakers come out. (OH and is there a legal precedent, by which I can taze the drunk guy that is going to save my party by telling me what to play? But he can't quite remember the name of it?) So I'm planning a much more extensive booty shaking playlist for next month. When my wife, who has insisted this was all a waste of money, spent an hour at the console mixing tracks, I knew I won the battle!
