Tuba - 18,TT or THT
Tuba - 18,TT or THT
Hi there
I've been loving my 2xTitan48 (15" loaded) with Otop12 (melded) since I've build them 10 years ago. Good for party - especially outdoors.
Had also the autotuba in my former car. WOW that was awesome. Now it rests as sub in my PC setup.
Current setup at my living room is
JBL Control 29 driven by a Crown XTI1002
10" Sunfire True Sub mk2 (20 years old and still going strong)
The Sunfire packs a good deep bass from a box only 11"x11"x11" but when playing loud - it cannot keep up.
All types of music is prefered. Country, house, metal, rock, pop, trance.
Bass is something I never can get enough of.
Levels concert like can happen
Thinking of building (drivers are in my storage ready to build)
2x dual loaded MCM 55-2421 Tuba 18 approx 20" wide
2x single loaded MCM 55-2421 Table tuba approx 18" wide
1x single loaded Dayton DVC-385-88 THT approx 21" wide
1. What config will you advise for best performance and headroom.
2. Will 2 subs (Tuba 18 or Table) fill the whole room with bass better than the THT ?
The only limit is size - cannot fit lot of monster size cabs.
I have a Crown CDI 2000 with plenty of power, DSP and limiting - so no worry here.
Please advise

Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
It's a matter of how low you want to go, 50, 40 (small Table Tuba) 30 or 25Hz.
Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
My Sunfire goes to 18hz according to specs. But I don't know if my music will need that deep bass.
Heard the Tuba 18 vs Titan48 vs JBell SS15 vs Monitor Audio RSW12 - no one goes so deep in music as my Sunfire.
I can not tell. Guess about 30hz - no need for movie ultra deep sub.
Small Table Tuba - new design ? Bought plans back in 2011 ?

Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
It may go to 18Hz but those pesky laws of physics prevent it from doing so with real authority. Besides, there's no music content to hear at 18Hz, that's purely home theater LFE territory. The limit for music is 30Hz even with modern Dubstep, 40Hz with classic sounds.
Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
Which brings us back to about 30hz as aim for response. 30-35 guess nobody will notice much difference.
What about cab sizes, max SPL and room filling - what are your thoughts ?
(there was a new player the Small table tuba)

Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
Hi again
Doen't anyone have any suggestions ?
Small Table Tuba. I'll manage to fit one dual 8" 20" wide on each side. How deep will they go with a 20" cab.
Dual loaded Small Table Tuba vs dual loaded Tuba 18 - who has the best output with 20" cabs?

Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
Same output, different extension, which takes us back to Post #2.
Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
There aren't any files in the SPL Chart Tool for the T18 or the Small TT, so I can't put up a clear side-by-side comparison. I'm thinking the Small TT should outperform the T18 option in both SPL and Extension. But, that's only intuition and as the years pass, I realize more and more how faulty my intuition really is.
That said, if it were me, I'd probably choose the "2x single loaded MCM 55-2421 Table tuba approx 18" wide" option and I'd do them long style, stood on end. Output and extension will likely be more than you regularly use and plenty for a good cranking every so often. To me, I'd personally take a little more extension than a little more output. As long as the audio is clear and undistorted, at the end of the day, there's never enough volume to satisfy that "it could be a little louder" thought in the back of my mind. But, if it covers all the lows I throw at it, I'm always satisfied.
That said, I have zero experience with any of those options. So, take it for what it's worth.

Hi Bill
Post#3 - 30-35hz would be my aim. Not higher.

Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
Do I understand the plans correct.
Will a 11" TT single loaded have the same freq. response as a 22" dual loaded. Meaning that a single loaded 22" will go deeper ?

Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
Low frequency extension is determined by mouth area, not driver content. It takes two 11" single loaded TT to equal one 22" dual loaded. One 22" double loaded has the same response as one 22" single loaded. The difference is that the double loaded will go louder, not lower.
Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
For the most part, yes. Although, the increased mouth area will push the low frequency corner down slightly and the overall response will flatten a little, compared to a single 11" cab. You'd see these effects in a measurement. But, wouldn't be able to hear the difference in this case.
In my plans, the TT and TTLS have a max width of 18" for a single driver cab... and your point and question still remains valid. The most valuable and noticeable effect of maximizing cab width (per driver) is increased sensitivity... For the most part, it's free output. Although, the low frequency corner does extend lower with a wider cab too. But, again, it won't be a noticeable attribute in this case.Meaning that a single loaded 22" will go deeper ?
If you've got 4 drivers, build them as dual driver cabs. Won't hurt a thing and you'll be happy as a clam. And, you'll likely be just as satisfied with single loaded max width cabs too. That is, if you're able to keep that "what if I doubled my drivers" thought out of the back of your mind.

Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
Hi Bill.
Just a question for the Small Table Tuba.
Got the plans, but dual 8" loaded cabs are not mentioned.
Would a 20" wide do for dual loaded 8" and must I double the braces ?
Between panel 3 and 5 must there also be a brace as in other dual loaded designs ?

Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
You can use dual drivers with a double wide cabinet, plus double the braces. In the future please open a new thread instead of tagging on to an unrelated thread topic. Thanks.
Re: Tuba - 18,TT or THT
I'm going to expand on that answer with a snippet from newer plans than you have...
Bill, it is his thread and he's asking questions that seem very relevant to his initial post. Seems the natural place to ask IMO.
The answer to your question is, Yes. 19" panel width plus 2 half inch sides will put you right where you want to be.TableTuba Plans wrote:...You may use dual eights with panel width of 19 to 34 inches...
