Build active T18s

#1 Post by joao.roscoe » Mon Jul 02, 2018 10:20 am

Well, well,

Got the plans, and my two MCM drivers are on their way.
Meanwhile, I'm wondering: how critical is the free volume inside the driver chamber? How problematic would be placing objects inside the horn itself?

The idea is to include an amp such as this one:
https://www.parts-express.com/sure-elec ... --320-3360
...*and* a switching power supply (2in x 4in x 10in) inside the cabinet to make it an standalone unit.

Would it be possible to cram the electronics inside the driver chamber, without disturbing T18 performance?
Other possibility: installing the same board and PSU inside the horn itself, mounting both to panel #10, with a thick aluminium plate (1/8in x 4in x 10in) for connections/controls in the same panel.
Could I do anything like this without completely ruining the cab?

Best regards,
Joao

I doubt that takes up enough room to be a problem inside the driver chamber. You are greatly increasing the potential for ground loop noise by not having the sub amps placed as close as possible to the AVR.

Hmm, good point, hadn't thought about that.

Maybe an 1x1 insulator transformer on the sub side could take care of the issue - that would be easier than messing around with differential/balanced inputs.

On the other hand: I've been listening sad stories about poor dampening factor due to long speaker cables - in my room, "long" would be somethin around 30ft. Since I'm not that experienced, I'll have to ask: couldn't that be a problem?

Those stories are fairy tales. Read this:

Damping factor might be a problem with a tube amp and 100 foot cables.
