access panel mod?

#1 Post by himhimself » Sun Jul 01, 2018 12:49 pm

Finishing up my T30s this weekend - putting on feet and corners, another coat or two of duratex, installed the big mouth braces...
I am really not very happy with the way my access panels turned out. I think the flange could have been a little deeper, because the screws kind of screwed up the panels because they were so close to the edge, and I still feel like they just barely caught the flange underneath. Was wondering if I cut some aluminum panels (1/8 or 3/16 thick) about 1.5" bigger than the access panels and then screwed those down over top of the plywood panels. The screws would then go through the sides of the T30, plus the part of the flange attached to the underside. Think that might work?
They sounded great first time out. Planning to use them this coming weekend for an outside Independence day event. I'm building a v-plate right now to get a little more oomph.

I looked at the plans that I have and it looks like there were supposed to be extra flanges made. Were you able to see this in Sketchup? The 1/2" thick flange should have been enough for the screws.
Your idea will help with what you already have.

If you followed the plans the flanges have 3/4" of exposure, which should be enough.

My flange "shelf" is probably between 5/8 and 3/4. It's more that the screws are 1/4-3/8 from the edge of the access panel. I'll try countersinking them better, but being so close to the edge, the top layer of the plywood got a little buggered up.
Hoping to finish up the v-plate this evening...

Put tape over the area you want to countersink and drill through that. Then remove the tape. That usually keeps the area outside the countersink nice and clean without chipping.
