Can you mix speakers in a T39

#1 Post by Double0 » Mon May 28, 2018 9:20 am

Hi Guys,

Can you mix speakers and width sizes in the same design or is this no desirable.

Example a 20" wide with a lab 12 and a 16" wide with a 10" 3012LF.

Can you? Yes.
But you haven't built yet right?
Buy all the same drivers...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 (melded array) with March 2012 plans. 2 more under way with CD horn
T39's: 4 x 20" BP102 , 2 x 28" 3012lf.
WH8: x 3 with melded array.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Thanks grant had found a special on some lab12's, was wondering if it made sense.

How do you use your t39 -bp102 vs using your t39-3012lf?

As I said earlier, it makes more sense to try and use the same drivers. Doing that from the outset is a good move.
The reason: They're recommended drivers, but they have slightly different responses, so need different EQ.

I use the 4 x BP loaded cabs on one sub output of my DCX2496 to limit and EQ them properly via one amplifier, then another output on the same device for another amplifier for the 2 x 3012lf loaded cabs.

I built the 4 x BP loaded cabs years ago. 20" wide is the maximum width for those cabs.
I built the 3012lf loaded cabs more recently, (because I got them cheap) as per the plans they are built to 28" wide, maximum width.

I've never been in a situation where I wish I had built slimmer cabs. A number of people will suggest building a pair of slimmer subs for smaller gigs. I just turn down. So build as wide as your pack space allows to maximise output. You can always turn down :)

Waiting for a leg injury to clear up, then i will start my build, wanted to build a small set up to be honest as I had said before trying to keep thebpack size small and weight minimal as I make over my set and bring it into 2020. Can your pair of 3012lf keep up with your dr250?

If you want to keep weight down, only use the 3012lf in your subs. They save you about 14 pounds per cab compared to a lab12.
I've reckon the 4 x BP loaded cabs are about 3dB down compared to the DR250's, but the 2 x 28" 3012lf cabs seem to keep up...

Okay understood, I was wondering also if I changed the height to 37 from 39, if that would kill the design, that would allow me to go through the side doors and close easy.

The T39 is 39 inches tall, 19 1/2 inches deep, and whatever width you choose (from 13 inches to ....). It will fit through doorways with no problem because of the depth.

Between the 2 doors at the back is 38", it will butt the handles cross ways at 39", was just asking if that could be a possibility, would save some space if it could.

Yes, it would kill the design to reduce the height from 39" down to 37".

Having built both T48s and T39s, the T39s are a joy to move around in comparison!

In both cases, wheels, wheels, wheels (and skid boards).

I don't treat my speakers with any kind of respect, the time I gain moving them is more time spent on the mix.
Built:
6xDR200, 2xT39, 2xT48, 2xJack110, 1xOmni10.5, 1xAutotuba, 1xT18, 1xSLA Pro, 1xW8, 1xW10

Chris, I know the feeling you use your T39's with your Dr200's? How wide are your T39's?
