Self nomination for village idiot..

#1 Post by AKC1 » Sun Apr 22, 2018 4:27 pm

So... I appear to have made rather a large mistake..

Having been shocked at how much Baltic birch was I scoured the local sources for a good alternative . A local supplier had some great looking ply with equal layers at a good price. I parted with quite a bit of money for the six pieces of 8 by 4 that I needed to build my carefully chosen 2x OT12s and 2x T45s. The supplier at my request cut each sheet to 4 by 4 and was very helpful getting onto the car roof rack. A feeling of horror ensued however as i carefully unloaded at home. In the light of daylight I was able to see that that nice outer ply was actually a paper thin veneer and that already it could be seen to be peeling off!

This is obviously not the ideal wood to be building high quality airtight speakers from, my question to you guys is can I make this work??

Thought of a few potential solutions:
1. leave veneer on but screw as well as PU?
2. sand off veneer where joints will be then just PU?
3. both
4. something extremely clever that Bill's forum come up with??

For you help I would be very grateful!

Alex

The Arauco ply I use has a thin veneer with 5(?) equal plys and it's held up great so far. It was in the plans and has been used by numerous people on here.
BFM builds:
XF212
T24 BP102 24"
2x SLA's 6-5" mids, 9-gt-302's
2x AT 14" MCM 55-2421
TrT 5" MCM 55-2421
AT 18" JBL GTO804
2x OT12 flat array

The Arauco I've used doesn't have a thin veneer, if it did I wouldn't have used it. OP, I wouldn't trust that wood unless all the joints are both glued and screwed.

It will work, but will be more prone to peeling and chipping during moves.
Get some good Duratex coats on it and use durable corners.
I added sacrificial strips of hard wood to my subs, 1/2 inch wide by 3/16 thick ASH strips up the backs so when the subs were lifted up stairs or into a trailer the backs did not get scraped.

Thank you Bill, just checking as i want to get this right are you saying glue and screw is sufficient without the extra sanding. :fingers:

Thank you

Just sanded the duratex off some cabs and the outer layers are not paper thin like a veneer but not quite as thick as middle layers. Still 5+ plys. It's the same recommend in the plans, so keep using it?
