Critical placement or do i just need bigger tubas?

#1 Post by J_Dunavin » Wed Jul 19, 2017 10:06 am

It seems that every venue I do, it's extremely critical to take the time and make sure my four T24's are placed in such a manner that A) I follow the placement rules and B) Are placed so that they sound the best at the center of the dance floor.
This seems like an obvious thing to do during set up, but I am facing the problem that if I don't get it just right, my T24s seems to load up in an area that I don't want the bass to go. (example - sounds.... ok on the dance floor, but sounds like a freight train coming through the foyer entrance area.)
My 24s rock, but getting it focused in just the right spot always seems like a challenge.

Would simply upgrading to bigger tubas fix the problem?
I keep thinking to myself, that if I just have more tubas than placement won't be so critical to get the sound I want on the dance floor.

That's all about placement. Larger subs will do the same thing, just louder.

How do I ensure that I place them properly?
I usually place one sub on the dance floor and walk around till I find a spot where it's really loud, then place there.
That spot I find though, doesn't always work for the sticky rules :(
I guess every situation is different....

Do the sub crawl, although crawling isn't required. Put a sub where you want it loudest, play pink noise, walk about with a C weighted sound meter in hand. Put the subs where it reads the highest.

Or, just put 'em right up against the dance floor and don't worry about the rest of the room......assuming the dance floor is out a ways from the wall.

I've tried that before, but of course it doesn't sound as nice as when it's corner loaded for example.
That's why I thought... maybe I just need bigger, or more tubas, and then if placement is going to be tricky, just line em up in front of me, facing the floor.

All of this comes because last weekend I was forced to change rooms at a venue at the last min, AFTER I was all set up. The event coordinator new of the hassle and I was compensated, but I had some complaints about the sound. NOT from the kids, but the chaperones.

Bill... Crawling not required

Did the event co-ordinater tell you where to set up? That's always a recipie for bad sound.

YUP!

The original room, was a large area between two gymnasiums. It sounded awesome, but the overhead lights couldn't be turned off. So we moved to the adjacent gym, which was huge, but we could turn the lights off.

Wait until you do a wedding and the wedding co-ordinater won't let you bring in your speakers because they "look too loud"!

I've had that one before. I did sound for a ballet...they didn't want me to use my 'rock and roller speakers' ...but it was too late for them to get someone else. So, I did it, and all was well.
