T39/48 Reducers

#1 Post by jdmrivera » Tue Apr 04, 2017 11:21 am

The plans for the Titan 48 say reducers are required when using the lab 12/15 but may be omitted when using more than two cabs. Is the same true for the Titan 39?

Thanks
Built:
Omni Tallboy 15 w/3015LF (My BBQ music Machine!)
2 Lab 12 T39s 24" Wide
4 OT12s, 2 Melded Array, 2 Flat Array

My T39 plans do not mention the reducer being optional in the LAB version but my plans are from 2011. Perhaps Bill can chime in.

From the T39 plans:

"With twelve inch low Fs drivers if the panels are wider than the anchor(s) driver chamber reducers are used. If your twelve inch driver Fs is less than 35Hz, as is the case with the Lab 12, you must use chamber reducers. If the Fs is 35Hz or higher do not use reducers."

Hope this helps.

The 3012LF is only $5 more, has the same output, and is much lighter.....so, why use the Lab in the first place?

6 - T39 4-25" 2-22" 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512 Melded/NSD2005
1 - T24
2 - XF210

Yeah - unfortunately I was a little fast on the "buy" button and already have the lab12s. Trying to decide it's worth the effort to return them.

Ahhhhh.......that's one I can't help you with. Money vs. weight - you decide.

Where did you get them from? Parts Express will take them back, no problem. Call customer service, let them know you purchased Labs by "mistake".

If it were me, I'd return them and use the 3012LF. The cab(s) were re-designed to accommodate the Lab drivers. The original Titan design was done with KappaLites as the design model.

Yeah - got them from parts express. I'll check in to the shipping cost for returning them. I have 4 of them.

edit: Just checked - shipping would be $147! I'll keep them :wall:

That is why I said to CALL THEM. Talk to a live person. Explain to them that you want to exchange them for KappaLite 3012LFs, they might hook you up on shipping. The call is free. I'm not a big fan of the Lab drivers. Especially in Bill's designs. Except the HL10C, of course. Bad ass little drivers. Pity they are extinct now. I still have 1, BNIB, waiting for a home in a Table Tuba.

Just talked to a very nice lady there and she basically said shipping is on me. What do you not like about the labs - other than their weight?

I don't know much about actual speaker applications, but is the sensitivity of the 3012LF the reason for the same output as the LAB12? or are there other factors?

Sure, the labs weigh a little bit more, but it's certainly not a dealbreaker. If they weren't suitable, they wouldn't be in the plans. I built my T39's with Labs (back when the Kappalites were more expensive) and I think they sound great. Just build them with the Labs and enjoy!
