Nothing like found stuff
Nothing like found stuff
Mmmornin! I pulled a 12" JBL GT120 from my car a while back & it's been sitting around. I could always sell it for peanuts but of course I was going to look up the specs first - aside from the fs being lower than these recommended drivers, everything else lines up pretty well for a T48. Thoughts??

The question is - what are you going to do with it? Put it in the living room for movies? Throw it back in the car? Put it in your shop to play some tunes? I'd say you could do all of those at low volumes.
I wouldn't even consider it for live sound.

Re: Nothing like found stuff
The specs are within range, including Fs, for all the sub designs that can take a 12" driver, with the T60 being a possible exception. (the T60 plans don't list a spec range and I'm too lazy to look up and compare the LAB12 specs)
The reason Hi-Fi and auto sound drivers aren't recommended (recommended not to be used) is the construction materials are usually less than desirable for a horn loaded application and the cones can be damaged by the elevated pressures that are present in a horn. However, like you said, it's something you already have... essentially free. IMO, go for it. If it falls apart, it's only a couple hundred dollars (or less) to get one of the recommended drivers. If it doesn't fall apart, you've got a kick ass speaker cab for peanuts and some hobby time in the garage.
Out of curiosity, what would you do with it?

Re: Nothing like found stuff
Well, I was thinking the only area that I don't have covered properly so far is the xm radio in the garage, so it'll be stationary, with no plans whatsoever to gig it or rent it out. It's very much not a need that I have, but y'know. Not many of us are having this much fun because we need to, right?? And yeah, it's sitting in the garage already. I figure I'd be a dummy NOT to build a horn around it.

Re: Nothing like found stuff
There is that
But yeah Seth - in my dreams I'd absolutely tear into a 3015 T48+280 just for the sake of sweet, sweet overkill.

With a good EQinf, any T39 or T48 with that driver and one of your Jack's will be pretty epic.
