Re: Is this the new Drain Tuba?

I've only found problems with simulating bass reflex when either the port is long enough to have its own resonance in the pass band or the box is deep enough that the back causes a half wave cancellation in the pass band. Beyond about 2.5 feet deep. I mean if you have a port as wide as the box it be...

Re: Finally! Omni 12 Tall Boy build

Because the low bass is crossed over at 400 Hz, the best output will be had with the kappalite 3012lf with 9.1mm Xmax (14mm Xlim). The 3012HO performs similarly in the bass range and I put one of them in my subwoofer cabs just to test before the 3012lf turned up, and with 6 mm xmax not bad if you go...

Re: Build Progress

Nice - I did look at the SLA pro - decent 100dB sensitivity in a compact cab. They probably would have played cleaner in an echoey environment than Omnitop 12 with Comp Driver. I also like the look of a taller thinner cab more than one that is wider than it is high. I did look at the Tuba 24, but it...

Re: Good article on SPL

Sometimes great discoveries happen during petty feuds. Nikola Tesla vs Thomas Edison comes to mind (Edison thought to be the "aggressor" and his barbaric execution of an elephant with AC to "slander" Tesla). If I recall, Wayne is not selling drivers, only the cooling kits, which ...

Re: Good article on SPL

I read Wayne Parham's full article on cooling the Lab drivers. For those who like a good read, https://audioroundtable.com/PiSpeakers/messages/17646.html His findings were that the central pole piece (the cylinder of metal conducting the field from one side of the magnet such that there is one pole ...

Re: Good article on SPL

You usually don't get to the melting point of the copper on a coil (apart from the case of a peak overload from several times too much power). What happens most often is you reach the melting point of the glue which causes the coil to come unwound into a jumbled mess of spaghetti, or another option ...

Re: Good article on SPL

Good points. Some voice coils can withstand a higher temperature to failure (usually the glue and insulation fails first), though if it's just a bigger coil that dissipates more watts at a given temperature, then power compression would be similar. Now supplying 100 watts to 1000 capable speaker thi...

Re: "Fast", "Punchy" and other such subjective terms used to describe bass

I think the subwoofers people talk about sounding "slow" are those with excessively ringing enclosures. I had a pair of Kenwood speakers like that. The bass was like blowing air across the neck of a large bottle. I thought all that deep rumble sounded cool as a teenager and good for rap ba...

Stuffing the back of compression drivers

When I built my Omnitop 12, I took apart the compression drivers and noticed the chamber behind the diaphragm is uninsulated metal. I put in a small piece of foam. I can't tell whether it sounds any smoother. What do you think? Waste of time or will there be some audible results in some cases?

Re: QX Aero 10, New high performance Table/Auto/Truck Tuba woofer?

Excursion at Fs is moot. Fs is free air resonance. It's measured with the driver literally dangling in the air. In that configuration Z is at a maximum at Fs, which results in excursion being at a minimum, but we don't use drivers suspended in the air, so it doesn't have a whit of relevance where l...

Re: SLA pro or omnitop

Yes, but I've seen plenty of cobbled together systems with some ancient powered mixer with limited EQ. Other systems are straight out of a DJ mixer into power amps just using the inbuilt 100Hz crossovers. I've seen a system in a hotel with trap cabs (15+ horn) plugged into a Sony mini system. Now do...

Re: SMSL SA-98E the ultimate space saver rig amplifier!

I will have to measure. I'm thinking it will be somewhere between 20 and 25 V at its full 36 volt power input. I will confirm back when I've put a volt meter to them. If I could get a bank of power resistors it would give me a better idea of its capabilities (with a piezo tweeter in parallel to list...

Re: SMSL SA-98E the ultimate space saver rig amplifier!

I'm not sure what the problem is, it's fed from the output of the drive rack with the volume control used as an attenuator, left amp is bass (33-95) and right amp is tops (95+) and yes it is in my room haha. Because of the fan noise and glaring blue lights on Peavey IPR1600 amps being annoying durin...
