Re: more spinning hurricane nuts
To avoid in the future use the "security screw" technique pioneered by Harley (I believe) to prevent movement of the hurricane nuts. Also always make sure the bolts go in by hand or with only very slight pressure applied to an allen wrench. Using coarse threaded nuts/bolts works better wi...

Re: Help please: Spinning Hurricane nuts
+1. Hammering hurricane nuts has to be the quickest route to a spinning bolt. When I built my cabs I didn't think about the epoxy trick, so they're not glued at all. I used 1/4 h-nuts (probably overkill) in baltic birch (can't speak for softer woods). I tried many drill bits in 1/64 increments in sc...

Re: Davids for Tom
After building a DIY speaker kit some time ago, I was testing the speakers and I quickly found out that the two didn't sound exactly the same, but I had a hard time describing the difference. While doing some A-B listening, I came to realize that the bass response was better with one speaker than wi...

Re: Davids for Tom
I find it very surprising that a driver blew both sides at the same time, while cranking the volume for only a brief period. Moreover, out of 4 drivers per box, it's the exact same one thats problematic. I'd suspect a wiring problem. Also, did you verify every driver's polarity with a 9-volt battery...

Re: Crown XTi 4000 needs a compressor - dbx ???
Do you mean -3db relative to the voltage limit of your cabs, or 3db below the amps full rated power ? Common practice here is if for instance the plans call for a max voltage of 50 volts, you set the limiter so the amp never produce more than 50 volts. You can verify that with a voltmeter. If your s...

Re: Crown XTi 4000 needs a compressor - dbx ???
If the guy that plugs in your rig clips his own mixer, then there's nothing you can do to fix the sound after that. There's a lot of folks out there that will tell you to limit 3 db above the rms rating of your cabs (so-called music program, 3db crest factor). However, this is counting on the fact t...

Re: Crown XTi 4000 needs a compressor - dbx ???
In fact, the built-in limiter in your xti amp is a hard compressor. Compressors are invaluable for vocals, instruments and such. But if you mostly DJ with cd's, maybe a compressor is not really needed. Today's cds are already so much compressed (especially on a lot of electronic music records) that ...

Re: Plywood Charlotte NC
Surely Charlotte isn't that bad Ohhhhh yes it is. The biggest problem with Charlotte is that it wants to be a world-class city, but the population isn't exactly "world-class." The city plans poorly, taxes wantonly, and spends wastefully. An example... they're building a four lane highway ...

Re: MA / New England Builders, where to find 1/2" Baltic Bir
From what I understand, you own a rental operation and may have some use for some pluwood. Worst case, any lumberyard can get you baltic birch by the pallet. Good news is that there's only 33 sheets in a 1/2 Inch bb pallet. That should cost you under 900$. That's a hell lot of sawdust, but way bette...

Re: PL Premium 8x vs 3x?
I've used pl advanced once, to repair masonry works. If I'm correct, pl advanced is gray in color, doesn't expand mucch and is more targeted for masonry. Can't comment on pl fast grab 8x though. But it is significantly more expensive IIRC.

Re: MA / New England Builders, where to find 1/2" Baltic Bir
Guess I was lucky... The first time I ever needed Baltic Birch I searched all kinds of places on the net. Finally while I was at my local hardware/lumberyard for something else I asked a guy at the counter if they had any kind of ''premium plywood'' (they mostly sell OSB and subfloor ply). The guy a...

Re: Decent 1/2 plywood SOS for THTLP build.
When I think about it... Since the number of plies is what's important, I guess you could have used 5-ply 5/8 BC exterior plywood. WAY cheaper, available anywhere, and probably no heavier than baltic birch. I should have thought about it earlier... :wall: Stick to 1/2" (12mm) plywood. If you c...

How does a thread start out as a good deal on PC and end up talking about women, beer and food. A man's got to have his priorities straight. Tools come in at #4. Well... I own a restaurant and bar, and am a hobbyist woodworker. Glad to see I'm well set on the four priorities :hyper: Us frenchmen we...

Re: Decent 1/2 plywood SOS for THTLP build.
28 bucks for the 5x5 baltic birch is a good price. 4x8 sheets do exist, but not all suppliers have it in stock, for some reason I'm not aware of. It should be under forty bucks and 9 ply so I don't know what your sixty buck 5 ply birch actualy is. Have you considered building everything arauco from ...
