Re: Another newbie with an interesting quest

An airhead is just a cab with space built in for an amp. Essentially just extend the sides up an extra few inches and stick a second top on it. For excessive amounts of flexibility you could make a tiny 2U case and latch it to the top when you need it, use it separately when you don't.

Re: Sander question....

Yeah, it was more that I needed to work with what was in the shop at the time instead of running errands. I think I may have talked my dad into going splits on one, though. Would sure make life easier.

Re: Sander question....

Get a Jasper Circle Cutting Jig. The 200 goes up to 18" diameter holes, and the 400 does 1" to 7 1/2" diameter very fast, very easy and very cleanly. Sweet, I'll look into one of those. This particular project was more of a "ok, I need round pieces of wood about this big done in...

Re: Sander question....

Just trawling through old posts looking for tips and thought I'd share one. I use my dad's shop for all of my woodworking (dorm rooms aren't conducive to table saws :( ) and a while back he built a desk mount for the hand held belt sander. Love it! The control you get from using two hands moves the ...

Re: Canadian Suppliers and Shipping

Just an update for any Canadians who might read this in the future- don't order from MCM. I wasn't looking for shipping info yet when I ordered from them a week or so ago, and took the ~$10 shipping charge at face value. No dice. $38 COD + $10 shipping on a $35 driver bites. I'll be piggybacking the...

Re: Clamps

If you're stuck and are really desparate it is possible to use rope, but it's a pain and doesn't work nearly as well. Not reccomended unless you've got no other options, but it can be a lifesaver in a pinch. Just make sure you use blocks or else you'll have some lovely dents in your corners.

Re: Canadian Suppliers and Shipping

Yep that's definitely my preferred route, it's just good to know that I can hop on a bus to Waterloo and pick them up in person if I run into any more shipping headaches.

Re: Canadian Suppliers and Shipping

I've been thinking about this, and I've decided to bite the bullet, up my budget and go with 2 T18s and a pair of Omni 10.5s. This will let me buy drivers locally, as well as give me much more flexibility in terms of how much sound I can put out. It's more expensive, but I'd rather spend the money o...

Re: Canadian Suppliers and Shipping

First of all, thank you to everyone who posted- the level of support available on this forum is amazing. You've all got me a lot more optimistic about this working. So, it's looking like my best bet is to try and find replacement drivers from somewhere else, either loudspeakers.ca or an American sup...

Re: Canadian Suppliers and Shipping

That's the problem- the Madisound order is USPS, and it's the same kind of difference: it only costs about $10 to ship the same order to Detroit.

Canadian Suppliers and Shipping

I'm in the process of starting an SLA/Tuba 18 build and am balking at shipping costs to Canada. The MCM 8" for the Tuba is already ordered (for $10 shipping), but the other sites I was expecting to get parts from (PE and Madisound) are charging very high rates to ship to Kitchener, Ontario. I u...

Re: Need advice for an odd application

Thinking about it a bit more I'm leaning towards the SLA + tuba 18 combo after all. I can't get started until January anyway so I'll wait a bit longer before ordering plans to see if anyone else has any other suggestions, though. One question on the SLAs - a favourite trick in my dorm is to mount yo...

Re: Need advice for an odd application

That's exactly my dilemma... I don't have any plans to do PA at the moment, and in that light an SLAH is clearly the best bet. But I just keep thinking about how great it would be to get back behind a sound board if the opportunity ever came up... some of the best times from high school involved sou...

Need advice for an odd application

First of all- hello all from Waterloo, Ontario. I've just been lurking a week or two, but I'm already hooked. Can't wait to move home and start building! Before I start that, though, I just need a bit of advice. I'm unfortunately not in the DJ or music playing businesses, but am looking for a sound ...
