Re: Wedding gig advice

Use 12 gauge extension cords, you’ll be fine. “Clean” power is a bit of a myth. Voltage drop is the real enemy and 12 gauge takes care of that. If you have two sets of tops, use one for the ceremony (the lighter set if you have to carry it) and have the other set ready to go for the reception. No su...

Re: blown driver issues

Thermal damage comes from heat. Heat is generated by current, measured in watts. This is why drivers are advertised with a power rating in watts rather than volts. The excursion limit comes as much from the cabinet as it does from the driver. Excursion is directly correlated to voltage. This is why ...

Re: blown driver issues

#1. Certain amps without a speaker attached can output far more voltage than they can drive into a load without crapping out. A reading over 100v isn’t uncommon with no load. #2. LImiters are only a protection against overexcursion. A speaker can fail from thermal damage even if it never reaches its...

Re: Can't find specs on obscure eminence driver??

I can tell you from experience with the Yamaha drivers that they don’t have the same midrange response that the stock betas do. I can’t say for that speaker specifically, but it seems to be the trend.

Re: On Board Amp

Regarding the amps... amps intended for specifc cabs often have DSP curves designed for that particular cabinet. Probably not a great choice for DIY.

Re: Small Church - Crazy Quest

Distributed systems can work very well, but they're a PITA to install, with all the wiring and impedance concerns. That’s why we have 70v and 100v transformers. On a constructive note... not all distributed systems require delays and alignment. in fact, most don’t. The only ones that do are when yo...

Re: custom dj mixer enclosure/Tuba45 down fire stands/LED Banner

You have to be careful using something like a Killawatt to measure amp current draw. Amps like the IpRs rely on instantaneous peak power to do their job. That can trip a breaker even if the average is much lower. Further, try to run a few of them on a cheap Generator. You’ll find out quickly what I...

Re: Why shouldn’t one use MDF in pro speaker cabs?

MDF has it's place, and that's in the home. It takes veneer better than plywood, so if you're going to veneer, the cab is never going to be moved, and it's safe from getting wet use MDF. The only reason to use MDF in pro-sound cabs is because it's cheap. If they skimp on the cab material they skimp...

Why shouldn’t one use MDF in pro speaker cabs?

Uptown Funk is why. If it ever gets wet (as these did) and Uptown funk is played, you get sawdust. These are Baltic birch cabs coated with duratex. Except for the handle cups apparently. I’ll have to have a word with the guy that built them. Notice the way it shredded. The Duratex had to be holding ...

Re: Background music remote control ?

You can use a VNC or TeamViewer type app to remotely control a computer for playback. TeamViewer requires an internet connection but Would let you control the pc from anywhere you have an internet connection, not just WiFi.

Re: Tuba HT as sound reinforcement

Robin, You have made several comments referencing voltage and wattage in a way that would lead one to believe you may not completely understand how they matter as far as speakers are concerned. Simply put, driver excursion is driven by voltage, and watts are consumed in the process depending on the ...

Re: A Second First Date (DR200s with Ribbons)

Hey BE; Which ribbons did you use? That vid sounds great..... Jujuman Dayton PT2C-8, 2 per cab in series. Spacing was done so that when stacked, the individual ribbons are equidistant. This means they're cheated slightly to the outside from perfect center on the cab. Are there any issues with the r...
