Re: Improving piezo sound
I've tested the polarity, it seems that the way they were wired originally was correct. I had my brother be my ears and he said that the original was louder. However using the app on my phone, it claims that both wiring variants are equal in response which is odd. It may just be the inaccuracy of my...

Re: Improving piezo sound
1/6 octave is the best you can hear, so there's no point in using any more resolution than that. The 2.2kHz drop could be polarity, so you need to switch it on the tweeters and see what happens. By switch it do you mean the polarity of the entire array? I'll also try and get the app figured out and...

Re: Improving piezo sound
These are the results from the app using phone mic. There's a small drop at 2.2 kHz and then a very steep drop at around 16.5khz. Is it safe to assume the steep drop is due to limitations of phone mic?

Re: Improving piezo sound
As long as your phone doesn't auto compress too much, you'll be able to see areas in the response when playing pink noise that are too low or high. They'll stick out, even without an actual calibrated microphone. But still, since the microphone isn't calibrated, trust your ears and take the info yo...

Re: Improving piezo sound
Hey guys, what's for some isn't for others. Averaging around $70AU for ECM 8000 here (new). New DBX mi is around $270AU, used, doesn't happen. PA2 new is more like $1100AU And the other day I saw a private listing for a DBX PA asking $600. I bet that's more than what they bought it new for. Someone...

Re: Improving piezo sound
I've been using my driverack pa 2 and the p eq to make the adjustments. I don't have the rta mic and don't really want to spend the additional money to buy it, although I'll probably end up buying it sooner or later, when I get more serious about my system. I find tuning by ear is pretty effective b...

Re: Improving piezo sound
From OTop 12 plans: Tweeters draw almost no current, so they may be wired with as small as 24 gauge wire. Lighter gauge wire requires less heat for soldering, so you’re less likely to damage the tweeters as well. I know I should've read over the plans a couple more times :wall: I've managed to fix ...

Re: Improving piezo sound
Key to not overheating piezo terminals is to use light gauge wire, no more than 18 gauge. Tin the wire with solder, then wrap it around the lug. It will take minimum heat to finish the job. Make sure you have at least a 40 watt iron, preferably more. Low wattage irons take too long to heat the join...

Re: Improving piezo sound
Thanks so much for the reply, it absolutely does help! I'm afraid point 3 you made may be my problem. I do recall accidently moving one of the connectors on the back of the piezo. Unfortunately they are all glued together and would be a shame to rip em apart. And thanks for the pink noise advice, di...

Improving piezo sound
Hi all, after building 2 otop 12's I've been dialing them in over the last week, and I've noticed that the piezos were overpowering the low end so I made the recommended adjustment to the crossover by moving the position of the 4ohm resistor. Also for a bit of context i am using 6 goldwood 1016 piez...

Re: Need help with crossover/limiting omni top 12
Thanks so much, once again guys! I ordered all the crossover components yesterday, hopefully they'll come soon! Looks like I'll be returning the one off Amazon. Thanks for once again opening my eyes folks, I guess that's how we learn though  I'll send a pic through once I have the crossovers r...

Re: Need help with crossover/limiting omni top 12
Do you guys recommend I assemble the crossover on a scrap piece of wood?

Re: Need help with crossover/limiting omni top 12
Looks like I'm gonna build my own crossover after allBill Fitzmaurice wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 7:03 am That crossover will not work. Off the shelf crossovers are designed to work with the resistive load of a dynamic driver. Piezos are capacitive loads. There are no off the shelf crossovers that will work with them.

Re: Need help with crossover/limiting omni top 12
Thanks for the reply Grant, the crossover is rated for 1000w watts though and has the exact same filter characteristics and crossover point as the one in the build plans. Are you saying it will distort because of the crossover? The trouble was that I'm not all too confident with wiring up the crosso...
