Re: Bands that do speaker placement completely wrong and still sound good

I once did a concert circa 2004 where the act was still using a cluster array PA. As I roamed the venue taking RTA measurements the sound changed radically over distances as short as five meters. I don't have the slightest doubt. He said the same, that he notices it when he moves through the crowd ...

This is interesting. Maybe this helps a lot for this drone stuff.

Re: Bands that do speaker placement completely wrong and still sound good

I'm not being a hater here, but I listened to several of Sun's songs, and they remind me a lot of Swans: massive dBs and about 3 or 4 notes for 20 minutes. With that kind of content, is high fidelity REALLY that important and or noticeable? Yeah, it's maybe a clique and worn out concept and i can't...

Re: Bands that do speaker placement completely wrong and still sound good

In one interview the guitarist of Sleep says Matt – I like the Dual Darks a lot yeh, I like the two hundred Watt Thunderverbs and I like those little OR50’s or 80’s? Ade – It’s the OR50. Matt – Dude! Those things fucking shred if you have a bunch of them and you mic the shit out of them and use them...

Re: Bands that do speaker placement completely wrong and still sound good

The #1 complaint of sound men in the FOH is guitar players with stacks who play so loud that they can't get a good mix out front. I can imagine and as i said i begin to understand why that is. Thing is, those two bands are well known in the hard rock genre as notorious amp and cabinet accumulators....

Especially for those two bands i would guess that they are i...

Bands that do speaker placement completely wrong and still sound good

I've read a lot about some specifics and problems of speaker placements over the time. Here, over at talkBass and elsewhere. Especially Bill's knowledge is very interesting in this regard. I think i understand the basics quite well now, regarding sub placement, the effects of boundary loading, comb ...

Re: A seeker wants to say hello to become a finder

hello i agree with the Otop12 recommendation, easy enough to build and build cost is a lot lower compared to sla's. the jarray version is lighter but as said not square to just stack on top of each other. the bracket's included in the plans help fix that. it's a little more work that's all. i got m...

Re: Old, big, heavy & awesome amps

Do you want such a big amp as that? The general theory is to run amps wide open, and use a limiter on the signal, as is required in plans for horn subwoofer safety. It doesn't make sense having massive available power in that scenario. I'm trying to make a decision whether i want to build bfm's or ...

Re: Old, big, heavy & awesome amps

Hi Grille, I have a Thomann TSA 4-300. Whilst being heavier than switch mode powered ("digital") amps, it's not that heavy, at 7.5kg. https://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tamp_tsa_4_300.htm In fact i'm lurking around the TSA 4-1300 for quite some time ( https://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tamp_tsa_4_1...

Re: Old, big, heavy & awesome amps

I had a Shure Vocal Master a while ago I got for almost nothing (it didn't work but it was just a blown thermal resistor). It was just the amp/mixer and one column speaker. That was the heaviest and most cumbersome sound equipment I've ever carried. Supposedly it was the best thing back in the day....

Interesting series! The 2450a is still available at Thomann in Germany. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Old, big, heavy & awesome amps

You don’t want those amps where the output components no longer exist, because they can’t be repaired. 90’s, 80’s at the oldest I reckon. I have a number of these, various brands, with iron power transformers (not toroidal). Go to a couple of long time operating production companies in your area, h...

Old, big, heavy & awesome amps

When reading through amp discussions, i occasionally see comments like "if you don't mind lifting your ass off - those old amps are super reliable and are getting sold off because everybody wants lightweight class d amps." But i never find examples for famous models, series or brands. What...

Re: A seeker wants to say hello to become a finder

J array? No, I don't think it suits your purpose. If you eneded up with 2 Otops per side, one of the great things about the Otops is they stack vertically flat (unlike the DR's and the J Array)… Once you've decided which way to go, build the subs first. Follow the plans to the letter. You'll find t...
