Re: Omni 15 - Can it be built lighter?

It'll never be helium-filled, but I had the same goal. The lightest I could make it was using poplar plywood and a single neodymnium woofer. No tweeter (surprisingly heavy!), but the midrange driver is required IMO. I did add two casters and a built in handle on the top edge for tilting and rolling....

Re: Omni 15 - Can it be built lighter?

Yes it can.
Poplar plywood is awesome. I built an Omni Tallboy 12 with it, it's very light.
Baltic birch is a fantastic wood, but is much heavier.
You could also leave off the tweeter if you don't require it.

I put corner casters on my cabinet and a handle. Moving it isn't a problem.

You might try the wayback machine at web.archive.org.

Look for https://uwpltd.com around the time the post was made.

That build looks very good to me.

You are dealing with the warping in the prescribed way, lots of clamps and some straight battens.

Honestly, your shop is far better equipped than anything I can hope for. Nice drill press.

Re: Off reservation, Duke Lejeune 4 x 10 build.

I have a few heads, the WT-400 is my go-to. I use it almost all the time. One of the finest bass amps ever made, IMO. The tube is there partially for marketing. From memory, the two triodes of the tube are put in parallell and used to warm up the sound a bit, not as a gain stage. So really a solid s...

Following your use of laser-cutting with great interest.
Are the black edges of your pieces caused by carbonisation of the wood by the laser?
I'm wondering if that would affect the bond strength of the PL adhesive.

Re: T45 stack

Use a hand saw, starting at each corner and working towards the centre. One could temporarily add a straight edge/ cutoff or some such, to the side edge, to act as an initial guide for the handsaw. I would use Tom's approach. A cheap handsaw will cut through brads as well, and if you are careful th...

Re: Xmax lower than recommended recycling drivers

Hi Job, I recycled a non-recommended, out-of-spec woofer for a Jack 10 some time ago. The thread is here: https://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=25520 It wasn't the same situation, it was just an experiment. But it worked out OK. Not as well as if I purchaced one of the recommen...

Re: J12L w/Piezos: How to add "Bass Only" option

I have been given a link, and here it is... https://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=19211 The tweets don't have to exactly half, but instead, have the upper 4 tweets as the half (and the remainder would be off). Then, the other two switch positions would be on, or off. That is a...

Re: J12L w/Piezos: How to add "Bass Only" option

I think you would need a 3PDT switch. In case you are not familiar with this, it's like three SPDT switches ganged together. One "switch" would connect/disconnect the +ve line from the jack to high-pass filter. The other two "switches" would bypass the low-pass filter at the +ve...

Re: TLAH crossover question

I think you can live without the low pass filter, but it's not optimal. Nothing will explode, but whatever high frequencies the woofers can reproduce they will, along with the tweeters. Probably the mid frequency response of the woofer will also change without a LP filter, Bill would know. An amazin...

Re: Best cab for JBL d140

Indeed, those are very old speakers. Here is a thread describing their construction and origin: http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=2555.0 They don't look like they handle a lot of power, maybe 100W or so? Also likely to be quite tired. If I was determined to use them, I might try making a single...
