I'm going digital.
I've finally taken the dive off the deep end and bought a digital mixer, a Allen & Heath QU-16: http://www.allen-heath.com/ahproducts/qu-16/ The shipment hasn't arrived yet, but I'll get my mitts on it soon enough. I shopped around a fair amount and I'm going with this model because it has RTA a...

Give me some FLAC
I make periodic trips to the used CD store and usually buy one or two things that look intriguing. I usually rip these to MP3s. At some point when disk space was expensive and processors were slower this sacrifice in sound quality made sense to me, but then I just kept doing it out of habit. So I ha...

Pono music player
So there's been a lot of hype at SXSW about the Pono music player http://www.ponomusic.com/ . This is Neil Young's pet project, and he cares deeply about quality audio. So has anybody heard digital audio at higher than CD resolution? There are a lot of celebrity musician talking heads in their propa...

The acoustics of large tents
We play quite a few outdoor weddings in the summer and many of them are in a large party tents. This last weekend the tent was 40'x100'. The larger the area, the higher the ceiling generally speaking. We do our own sound, so I don't have the luxury of wandering around while the music is playing to a...

J10 Review and a Observation/Question
So yesterday I did sound for an outdoor wedding ceremony for 250 or so. It was mic'ing the pastor, one soloist, and playing recorded tracks. Before I did the gig I did a quickie side by side comparison of my J10s with some new EV ZX1s that I have for monitors down in my basement. Both are small full...

Re: Looking for tips on a battery-powered PA
What if I just rented 4 100' extension cords of 12 gauge wire? Would the heavy gauge wire mitigate any negative effects of the long run? Mayne I'm just making it too complicated.

Re: Looking for tips on a battery-powered PA
The XR1212 claims to only rated for 120V, 275W mains power. If my math is right, that's less than 3 Amps it's going to draw. How much do you want to spend? You might be able to pull it off with a couple of deep cycle marine batteries (pretty expensive) and an inverter. I'm not sure how efficient in...

Looking for tips on a battery-powered PA
We are playing a wedding dance, but the client has also been consulting me on sound for the wedding ceremony which is outdoors on a grassy hillside 400' from the nearest outlet. I did see this piece of rental gear http://www.emionline.com/emirentals/speakers-batterypowered.php which looks intriguing...

What about a Mini SLA Pro boombox design?
Where you split a SLA Pro in half that has detachable speakers so you could hear that stereo image in your dorm room.

How about a design for a boombox?
My music-loving daughter is in college and could use some decent portable high fidelity. It would be also nice if it incorporated space for an amp, player, etc. I could use one too for the workshop or some tunes while working in the yard.

Re: Review on new Peavey XR1212 powered mixer.
Nice review man. I have one of these too for just such occassions. I was hauling way too much gear to a three piece monthly dance at the grange. So far I am pretty happy. I have not used the auto EQ yet. As far as mics go, I have been collecting older Peavey PVM series mics. You can shop them on eb...

Re: Review on new Peavey XR1212 powered mixer.
Cool! If you have any upcoming gigs in Minneapolis let me know. I'd even consider (gasp) making it across the river to St. Paul to check out the band. Do you have any cabs besides the Jacks? We always have our current calendar here: http://minnesotablue.com (along the left side of the page). At som...

Review on new Peavey XR1212 powered mixer.
I decided to drop my overly complicated rack for a Peavey XR1212 http://www.peavey.com/products/proaudio/mixers/xr/index.cfm/item/116919/number/03513720/XR%26reg%3B1212.cfm I gave it its maiden voyage last Friday night driving a pair of J10s doing bluegrass (all acoustic) in a coffeehouse. I think t...

Help troubleshooting volume dips.
I have a rack of stuff and during recent gigs I've had issues with volume dips. At the last gig I got a better vantage point to observe it happening (I am playing and mixing simultaneously). The volume starts going down, slipping little by little. I turn up the mains, but then the volume starts incr...
