Help with non bf speaker

#1 Post by y2kindyz »

Hey guys I was given a pair of Melheart PA speakers made by a local audio company. They have a 15" mid driver and a horn driver. The 15 has about 7 ohms but the horn driver is open. Here are some pics of the speaker

How can I tell if I just need to replace the diaphragm, or replace the whole driver?

Thanks in advance,

Oscar

Take the HF drivers apart, remove the diaphragm.
Now test the diaphragm again, seeing if you can find a spot on the voice coil where you get continuity again.
If you can get continuity that way, then the diaphragm's are likely blown.
Show us a pic!

See if Melhart can help you with what drivers they put in those cabs:
http://www.melhart.com/

Ask them what they loaded into those cabs, and if diaphragms are available.
If not, replace them with new drivers...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Probably a 3 to 1 chance that it's an Eminence driver. If Melhart can't tell you or supply one, call Eminence direct - they might be able to cross-reference if it's one they built.

Is Melhart still around? I know they were always big in the Valley and with Latin bands. One store carried 'em in San Antonio several years ago, but haven't seen any of their stuff in a while.

The HF driver looks to be an OEM rebadged Eminence PSD 2002. The crossover looks very substandard. I can't tell if it's a 1st order/1st order or if it's a second order high pass, but either way it should be replaced. An Eminence PXB2:1K6 would be appropriate.

Hey Bruce,
Yes they are still around. I actually remembered that I have a buddy that is working for them. I don't know if they are still building speakers, but back in the 80's and 90's they were the only game in town.

Thanks Bill,
I was able to match the the HF driver to the PSD. Thank you for the recommendation on the crossover. These speakers are pretty old. I am sure it will be a benefit.

Here are some pics of the diaphragm and magnet. New the PSD 2002 is $65 and diaphragm is $35. Should I just replace the diaphragm.

Let me know if I can get by with replacing the Diaphragm.

Thank you,

If all you need to replace is the diaphragm there's nothing to be gained in replacing the driver.

Ok I am a bit confused. I spoke to my buddy that works at melharts and be said the diaphragm is a MD2001. I looked it up on parts express http://www.parts-express.com/eminence-m ... --290-5620 and it is a 1".

The diaphragm I have measures 2". So I was thinking it is the PSD2002 http://www.parts-express.com/eminence-p ... m--290-445.

So is the one I need the MD2001 or the PSD2002?

Thanks in advance

Oscar

It's a 1" compression driver, which refers to the throat diameter, not the diaphragm diameter. I'd say they're slight variations on the same diaphragm, look at the pictures.

I would guess that it is the MD2001 as that's the same driver that's in all the Yamaha Club series cabs, and that's the same type of cab that you have there.....I have some of those diaphragms for spares. Bill's right, it's a 2 inch with a 1 inch exit.

If you haven't ordered them yet, I have 4 8ohm and 2 16ohm diaphragms I'd really like to move. Half of whatever PE's price is. Drop me a line. webmaster@speakerhardware.com
