Best amp choices for OTB15 and Jack 12

#1 Post by nola50 »

I have a Crown XLS1000 and XLS1500 and have come to the late and humble realization that neither of these will do headroom justice for these cabs for bass (Yes, I forgot the basics!). An XLS2500 may be adequate (440w at 8 ohms), but should I be heading toward the 800 to 1,000 W range for 8 ohms? About the only thing I can find without breaking the bank in the new category is the iNuke 6000 or iNuke 6000DSP. I don't want colored sound, so the idea of getting a big bass amp does not excite me at this time.

I'd prefer something light, new or used does not matter, 2U size.

FYI: I have an OTB15 and intend to get a pair of J12s.

So, bridge it. Either one. The 1000 will get you 1100 watts, the 1500 will get about 1500 I think....plenty to blow up either cabinet.

The exception being when you want to use bridged to get the required voltage swing (and don't want to buy another more powerful amp).
In that case, be very careful with your volumes.

It would be easier to give advice if you posted your driver in each cab...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Exactly what he said.....if you aren't getting enough juice, then bridging is a way to get it. I bridge 3 amps for my 6 subs.

The real question is why the two you have aren't enough....my bass player plays through a 100 watt Walter Woods driving a variety of different cabs with plenty of volume....

As Grant said, maybe a little more info on what you are doing with the cabs, what's in 'em, etc.

Other than that, the XLS1500 is 300W/8ohms, or 48V, and, provided you're not trying to take the cabs to max output (in which case you should be using more cabs), that should be ample to take either the 3015lf or the 2512 to around 40V without clipping, and that should be stinking loud.

So you would have a little headroom in that situation...

OTB15 has a Kappa Pro 15A

Jack 12 would be Deltalite II 2512 or Basslite 2012 (planned build for 2)

??

Sometimes I power my pair of Jacks using one channel of an XLS1502. Sometimes I use my other amp - a TC BH250, rated at 250 watts into the four-ohm load that both cabs present. My band mates sometimes have to ask me to turn down. But then I always have FOH...

Not sure why you think you need 1000W...

With an xmax of 3.2mm, the Kappa Pro 15 will be farting out long before you get anywhere near the thermal rating of 500 watts when you play a low note on bass. I'm betting the low E will make it complain with less than 200 watts.

Is that a a suitable driver in your plans?
Did you use the Pro 15A or the 15LF?

Got a feeling he means the LF.....that's what called for in the plans. I just went by the link.
