A stereo SLA build with 9 drivers each

#1 Post by cinezaster »

When you build a T18 you need something to come along.
Since I'm more into listening music then having a full blast of sound kicking me out of my couch while watching a movie, I went for a stereo setup of the SLA.
After reading through the plans and some questions asked on the forum I decided to make two cabinets with each 9 full-range 4"inch drivers from McGee
I'm living in Europe and couldn't find the recommended cheap 4" drivers without paying a big shipment fee.
After a long and thorough search and a couple of questions here on the forum I settled on some full range drivers of McGee, so no tweeters where necessary.
I also made a different choice about the design of the cabinet. I like to see the wood and use the multiplex layers as a style element. I also made it myself a bit more difficult by tilting the front panel by 4°.

Next my build process:
The corners of the cabinet are all cut at 45°, this way the layers of the multiplex will make nice corner. The frontpanel is recessed into the side panels.

I test fitted the drivers. No glue yet, only hold by the blue tape :D

Here you can see the dato for the flange and the recess for the frontpanel. I didn't use clamps for the glue-up only tape. I first glued in the flange on the sides, that way the flange works as an index for the bottom and top part when I started to glue them together

Nice work but you need to get your left and right further apart.
Built:
6xDR200, 2xT39, 2xT48, 2xJack110, 1xOmni10.5, 1xAutotuba, 1xT18, 1xSLA Pro, 1xW8, 1xW10

All I can say is:

+100 At least 2M apart.

I wasn't going to mention this, but you should have also had all the drivers lined up closer, so that the frames just touch.

I know, I even tested it, but I'll need to rearrange my whole living room for that.
Will do that in the near future.

That's not critical unless the LP is like four feet away.

What is the recommended single driver option in the US?
2 DR250s, 2 27" Lab15 T-60s, 2 30" Neo Titan 39s, 1 Autotuba...and looking for more!

I hope mine look even half this good when finished.

How are those McGee drivers?
