alternate drivers for goldwood woofer & tweeters

#1 Post by srini_r »

Hi,

I'm a newbee to speaker world & based out of India/Bangalore

I'm currently constructing complete HT speaker system that includes THT with Eminence Lab 15, TLAH Pro with Eminence 8" drivers & SLA Pro with Eminence 6".

also in the plans are center channel SLA, however, I'm facing difficulty in sourcing recommended goldwood 4" woofers (GW-4028) & Tweeters (GT-1016 & GT-302).

My recent order for these with parts-express, arrived with extensive damage & i have raised for refund and do not want to attempt a re-order

Goldwood do not have a India distributor either.

Appreciate if any of the forum member can suggest alternate to goldwood drivers/tweeters

Thank you

Hello, and welcome to the forum!

How big is your Home Theatre? Usually it's the 4" drivers that are used. Unfortunately, I cannot help as to a source in India.

i'll be using TLAHs are front speakers, SLA Pro (horizontal) as center channel, surround & rear speakers

It's horizontal speakers & surround speakers that are recommended to user goldwood 4" drivers & GT-308 tweeters
TLAHs recommended tweeter is GT-1016

i'm looking for help in identifying alternate drivers for these.

Thanks

Hi Srini,

The goldwoods are simply a set which have been proven to work - there are lots of other options available in the 4" category, the trick is finding some that are of reasonable value as you have to buy a lot.

Have you had a look at RS Components to see what they have?
Built:
6xDR200, 2xT39, 2xT48, 2xJack110, 1xOmni10.5, 1xAutotuba, 1xT18, 1xSLA Pro, 1xW8, 1xW10

Hi Chris,

i'm trying to match TS specification on the plan literature. So far could not find one that meets all the specifications.

RS Component does not sell audio components in India :(

Do you think Eminence 4" driver can be used instead of GW 4028 ( http://www.eminence.com/speakers/speake ... =Alpha_4_8)

Hi srini_r welcome to the forum :)

Can you find any 4" drivers at all in India?

If you can, and they have TS specs, you can compare...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Hi Grant,

I found the following driver & they match the TS specs (thanks to Chris for sharing RS component URL). I'll look out for more options though

Visaton FR10 8ohm 4" driver.

If you have any feedback on this driver, pls do share

Thanks

i was also checking Eminence Alpha 4, it's 'fs' specificaiton is a bit beyond recommended range.
is this a good option, instead of Visaton?

There are pluses and minuses on both sides, Visaton FR 10-8 versus Alpha 4. Either one should work.

My preference would be Eminence (purely due to easy availability). Its fs is rated at 123Hz.

would that make a huge difference to warrant a change in cross over design from what is recommended (in the SLA pro plan)?

curious to know it stack up against recommended goldwood GW4028?

Apples and oranges. The Alpha 4 is a pro-sound driver. You can use it in the standard SLA, but I wouldn't if there are less expensive options.

Here are three response graphs plus the driver specs. As you may notice, they are pretty similar; to my eyes the Visaton holds a bit of an edge against the others.

Why are you going with a TLAHPro? For a Home Theatre, a regular TLAH will be very good. The Pro version is for big venues such as a gymnasium, House of Worship or for outdoors.

Hi Bill,

Here in India, all these speakers cost twice over (with customs+forex conversion). Looking at India pricing, Alpha 4 would be a economical option.

Using it for curved SLA as center channel.

Will i need to re-work the cross-over or you think the one in the plan will work with Alpha too?
