8x Omnitop 12 J-array and 4x Titan48

#1 Post by vesthardt »

Hey guys! So today is the first day of this build log. I had all the wood delivered from the CNC machine around noon, and started building immediately. This thread will be updated every day for the next week, as I hope for them to be done this friday! I already had 4 titan48, that is why I am only building 4 in this round. Please tip in with as many tips and tricks as you can! I am not the most experienced woodworker in the world.... And sorry for 2 of the images being flipped! Not sure how to de-flip

Okay, I've ran into troubles. And of course, it is with the bended wood.

I have stapled the wood at the bottom part all over the place. That bit holds okay. But when I then bend and staple more, the staples just un-staple themselves and the wood bends back. And yes, the wood is cut in the correct orientation so that it is bending on the most flexible axis. Any suggestions? Maybe nails will hold better? Also, I noticed that the staples don't bend back inside the wood, but just dive straight in.

Are they pulling through the sheath or just pulling out of the base material? If the later then maybe longer staples? I cut out little blocks of blocks of wood, then used a brad nailer. After the PL was dry I then pulled the blocks of wood and the brad out. You can see an example in my DR250 build in my signature (page 5 second post). Also, wetting the outside of the sheath with warm water and letting it sit for 15 minutes will help the wood bend easier. The PL doesn't mind the wood being wet, it even helps to cure it faster.

They are pulling out of the base material. I have some really long staples, but I am worried they might just be too long
I will go check out your post immediately! And thank you very much for your tips :)

Is steaming the plywood a viable option?

Is it the right type of plywood? with the grain going in the right direction, you shouldn't have to steam it, it should wrap easily.

The horns on the OT and no where near as severe as the rear of a DR - can you post a picture of how flexible your ply is?

And is it three plies? It must be to bend. I've never seen 1/8" plywood that had more than three plies but I guess it's possible.

Stupidity is mean sometimes. This time around, i didn't think it would bite me anymore - but it sure did. When i cut the sheaths, i made 2 in the wrong orientation and put them in the scrap pile. Somehow my brain thought it would be a great idea to bend those over the horn! Anyways, thank you all for answering me. I was losing my mind. 2 horn sheaths have been installed now, pictures later!

I have seen, and myself committed, many speaker building related atrocities.

It just means you're normal.
