AutoTuba 14" wide 8" driver
AutoTuba 14" wide 8" driver
So far this build has been going good with only a few minor hiccups. I'm trying to recycle as much scraps as possible to keep the cost of this build down since it's going in my gf's car (luck her). My skills are improving with each one of these builds (minus the SLA's, but that's cus I can't math good). I also learned a new trick or two.
Here's panel 1 glued, screwed and nailed
Squeeze-out was so pretty I had to take a pic. Perfect line of squeeze on both sides. Kind of a unicorn for me.
This is where I had an epihany. Why not use the packaging the drive came in as your template? After finding center on the baffle and cardboard, lined it up and drew my circle. Then cut inside the line for safety and then you got a baffle. Also my first build that I cut the baffle with a jigsaw and not a router. Way faster and looked almost as good. Just need a jigsaw that blows away the dust for you That's the MCM 8" I'm using.
BTW, whenever I'm finding center, I keeping thinking it looks like the start of a Dead Kennedy's logo. I use to draw them a lot in school.
Driver mounted to baffle and what happens? Baffle slap. So I had to trim about a 1/16" all the way around. That ring is what I cut out. I got some skills
I'm liking the new retention blocks a lot better than t-nuts or hurricanes. F that.
Another thing I learned for cutting the angles a lot easier, is to place the panel on side panel pencil lines it corresponds to and make a mark to find the needed angle. Connect the dots on the width and down the length and you'll not only know exactly where you need to set your saw, but also the correct way so you don't cut it backwards. Panel 1 angle cuts are dead on as to the layout. I hope this lucky streak keeps going.

I wouldn't call it a "lucky streak". I would call it "new found skills"

Panel 3 installed. Surprisingly my circular saw goes to 51.5 degrees, so it needed minimal sanding.

FYI if you use different size drivers, measure like 50x so you don't have to keep buying wood cus you screwed up

Re: AutoTuba 14" wide 8" driver
So I'm finished with the build But there's one problem, I'm getting some bad vibrations on panel 7. At about 35hz on up it rattles quite loudly at 10v. If I place my hand on it it stops. I added extra brads and screws and it's still vibrating. Could it be panel 3?

Re: AutoTuba 14" wide 8" driver
It could be a bad joint between the 3/7 brace and panel 3.jimbo7 wrote:I'm getting some bad vibrations on panel 7. If I place my hand on it it stops. I added extra brads and screws and it's still vibrating. Could it be panel 3?
Re: AutoTuba 14" wide 8" driver
you think shooting brads from inside the driver chamber might fix it?

Re: AutoTuba 14" wide 8" driver
Brads aren't going to pull a loose brace tight. You need to use screws.

Re: AutoTuba 14" wide 8" driver
Update:
Finally got a chance to fix the vibrating 3/7 brace. Put 3 screw from the inside of the driver chamber to shut it up. No more rattles now
Thanks to this little tool, life was much easier. Just took a while when you can only turn it a 1/8-1/4 turn at a time.

best $3 I've spent
I put the box in my car to test it out, and HOLY JESUS is it loud! Way too much for my needs. At 20v my headliner wanted to come off.
Sounded really good inside the house, too. Might have to make more of these since it's 1/2 the weight and size of my t24.
