Slim of the Titans!
Hello again to all of those that followed my first build thread.
Yes, I'm fresh off of a pair of Jack 12's adventure. Anyone care to guess what does this idiot decide to do next? Well, build more cabs of course!
That's right, I am a sick, sick man. I not only have these titans (to compliment said jacks) in the mix, I also have plans for two more of each!
But enough of the intricacies of my ever increasing mental illness- Let's see what I have done with this segment, shall we?
The intent here is to replace two aged, HEAVY, and generally under-performing 18" direct radiator behemoths from the eighties. The infamous Peavey 118-sub.
Here's the "post-punk era wall of sound" with the offending subs in question:
.
Yeah, I know, they look damn good for antiques- lol -but I refurbished those bad boys about a year ago, before I knew much about good speaks. You see, this superman carries his hammer at all times.
We all know they don't sound as good as they look right? And we all know that hernias are painful and expensive right?
Right, so the only option I had to avoid HH hell (hernia/hemorrhoid) to say nothing of oft-maligned mud-rock sound, was to build some thingamabobs that should easily pound the old technology. I decided on slims for that reason. Lighter weight, easier pack, increased versatility etc. and if what I hear is correct, these should have no difficulty doing just that.
And titans because I just need to rock worlds, not turn their poop into soup.
So, Slim of the titans- let's get on with it!

Day 1 (Oct. 2, 2012)
The woodchuck has been busy!
Got them panels cut, at least the sides and first couple of panels- all ready for my best Van Gogh impersonation:
I don't know why, could be my non-existent dyslexia, but it took me the longest time to figure out where the "second line" for the panel layout should go. "Outside" just didn't do it for me so I thought I'd make it a bit easier on future builders, that haven't visited any other build threads;
It's DOWN. That's correct, draw your initial horn panel lines, then draw your second panel line on the side that is toward the bottom of your soon to be new cabinet. Hope that makes sense and yes, I feel better
And now that I feel better, I have to call it a night. Short one yes, but that's all the time I had. It's okay, there will be more, I promise
About 2hrs and day three is a mere 5hrs of sleep away!

Hehe, Yes, it's as fun for me as I hope it is for you.Tom Smit wrote:Aaaah, another saga! Let the journey begin, I say.
Though I'm still waiting for someone to say; "Hey, you are posting this nearly all at once! That's not a fair build account! My socks don't match!"
Let's just head that off at the pass right now, yes they're done- My build threads are all in retrospect. That, so I don't create a wonderful account of a beautiful journey only to discover that I have created something that strikes fear into the innocent passerby as they casually view them. Or worse, sends them into a Jamie Lee Curtis style screaming scramble to clear the state the moment I fire them up.
Oh, and I can't do anything about socks.

Day 2 (Oct. 3, 2012)
With my best laid artistic lines drawn the night before (As an artist- I signed them for posterity!) it was time to create arguably the most important part of the build in my opinion; The speaker mount (you know, baffles and anchors). Here is one of the un-hexagoganal anchors in real time action:
Alright, calm down. It's only a rough anchor. Sheesh
BTW, if you haven't followed my previous build, you should know that I had already decided on, ordered and broken in a pair of Lab 12's for this project during that build. Tough as it was to stop watching the absolutely riveting break in process, I did. Just in time mind you- How else would I be able to do the above? Duh.
So now we have said anchors cut, as well as baffles, good to the basket, what's next? Why- Glue and screw baby!
Notice I didn't stay at home and went big on the anchors? Yeah, them Labs, they be relatively heavy!
Another short night? Say it ain't so Gracie. Okay, it is so. About 3hrs worth but hey, we are talking about week nights. Fortunately day three just so happens to be the next day.
Awesomeness!

Day 3 (Oct 4, 2012)
I've always said, "you ain't built nothin' 'till you gots right angles".
Okay, I've actually never said that- but it does seem rather appropriate here - amirite?
So let's build sumpin'!
On goes panels ah-1, and, ah-2:
Cool yes? I certainly thought so, and not just because of my beverage in the foreground oh no.
Unfortunately however, it appears as though my lawn tractor is not impressed.
Suck it Crafty.
Quick: Anyone see an inconsistency in my timeline? *BUUZZER* Time up. Yes, it is the next day but just after midnight! Technically day two but who's really counting? Quiet you, this is *my* build thread. I'll stretch time and space any way I imagine fit.
It was 2am in Bolivia when I dropped for the night. What do you suppose happened after I actually woke up? Let's find out shall we?
Panels 3 and 4 found their way on the slab? Whaaaa? How did that happen? I should really start getting up before 3pm on Thursdays.
Pro-Tip: Use the tacked jig between panel two and panel one. I didn't (I know, idiot) cause I had drawn lines (ha!) unfortunately, they became unrecognizable when the squeeze happened. How did an idiot such as myself not see that coming?
Fortunately i was only off by a teensy amount as panel four came together with panel two, but quickly realized how ugly that could have been.
Bonus pic!
Never before did I imagine that sloppy ooze would make me so gosh darn happy. Oh.. I've grown so much since spending all of my waking hours thinking and doing this stuff- Anyone else remember doing normal activities and regularly interacting with the other humans that inhabit this big 'ole blue ball??
Ahh memories.
Meanwhile, back to actual important matters...
It seems that panel five finally made it's lazy ass up and in position:
Good for him. Just to make sure he stayed in place, I jig-tacked and braced him as you can see. Same for panel six. The lazy bum..
Psych!!...In the next post due to image attachment limitations!!

Re: Slim of the Titans!
Here it is, suspense over:
It was getting late, but that didn't stop me- Why not work on panel 7!? I did, but instead of hashing out the gory details, I thought it would be nicer to just post a pic of some wood, glue and clamps!
cooooooolll... And the astute will notice my fantastical artists rendition of a lab 12 shadowed on the cab side. You see, I was showing my son just how the speaker will be oriented and the only way to do it is with my mad sketching skills.
He got it, though it's a tough concept for the uninitiated to understand ("What? You mean it will be sealed, facing a board not three inches away from its cone? Silly boy, that can't possibly work!")
That wasn't my son's reaction mind you, but I have heard something similar recently from some "experts"
So at the end of this day, I sat them up on my super bench and since I've never seen anyone stand them up like this at this point in a build, just for you- some free build porn!
That's it, put it away- no more soup for you until day four.
I'd say there was a solid eight hours put in that day. *Whew* My brain is tired.

Day 4 (Oct 5, 2012)
Looks like it's time to get a handle on this build!
Haa, ha, ha... ha.. hee, he.. he he ..uh
Yeah, I crack myself up. I've often wondered why many times I am the only one laughing. The orderlys don't seem to mind though, with the exception of "lights out" and "medication time" of course.
I chose those handles because I used the same ones in the jacks and I do like them and uniformity (bent from military service I suppose).
They fit nice in relationship to panel nine, (no encroachment into horn) though I later found out that you have to be carefull when using. It's not at all hard to find your hand in the wrong position and that can smart!
Having the cuts done, it was time to fit the back!
All according to plan- well, except that I forgot to account for the width of the joint and had to tack a spacer in the slot- hehe. The exact same thing happened on the caster cuts.
Yes, I'm a dolt at times, aren't we all? Seems "measurement forethought=kryptonite" for those that fancy ourselves superheroes.
It's all good though. Not load or seal bearing. Worked out fine in the end. If you look closely (please don't) you can see the patch in the back brace pic below:
Okay, that last one officially happened on the eve of day 5. But I won't hold that against you
Day four in the books, about 3hrs then sleepy time.

Re: Slim of the Titans!
That ply looks really nice and your accuracy looks spot on.
I always forget how meaty those Labs are, I'm surprised that rear braces against the baffle aren't required.
It's funny but I look at the peaveys and think of a modern finish but then see a decadent design - everything in a speaker that I used to want. Man, I've wasted some money over the years!
