I've been running 3- 8 ohm OTops per side off a Crown XLS2500 for several years.....no problem.
Getting a 2 ohm per side capable amp is way easier than trying to build a 16 ohm OTop.....or doing a serial wiring scheme outside the box.
Would you feel safe doing this with 3 subs? Or do you run an individual amp for each pair of subs?
If you get a high-powered amp that's 2 ohm capable per side, you could run 6 subs on one amp with no problem....(even 8....but I wouldn't push it that hard).
I run one amp per two subs because I am using XLS1500s bridged. Plenty of power to handle 'em that way, but they are limited as they should be. Didn't intend to start that way, but as I added subs, it was easier to add the same amp configuration. I considered dumping the individual amps and going with an xTi6000 to handle 'em all, but the more I though about it - I can lose one amp and still have 4 subs running....so, I stayed with the three amps.
