What's it's purpose. I've been seeing it talked about and I honestly don't have any left on my 280s are they super necessary?

The diffusion rod increases horizontal dispersion to 120 degrees.
120 degrees is wider than most anything out in the commercial world.
It's an essential part of the melded array, so yes, it is super necessary.
If it wasn't, it wouldn't be in the plans...

Well they have came undone and fallen out so I guess I'll try and find a replacement.

You can get 1/2" ID PVC at any home and hardware store. Just give it a quick sanding with fine sandpaper or emery cloth, glue it on and paint to match.
