What would be a reasonable cost solution to EQ?
Goal: I'd like to be able to measure my home theater (mainly subs) response and use my DCX 2496 to apply a couple modest filters to accommodate room issues. I don't have a sound card (i think) that will allow for mic input (unless the laptop 1/8 inch is any good). I believe all I need is a cheap sound card for testing combined with a ECM or radioshack mic/spl meter. Is there a preferred method of doing this? I'd like to follow the buy once cry once philosphy if at all possible because eventually I'd love to EQ the mains as well (so a mic that goes >15k accurately would be a plus).

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=390-801 (which comes with calibration)
and this:

This is close to what I often use and works perfect with REW or similar software..

Looks brilliant, Except the usb/xlr part, did you have any issues with drivers?
I try to stay away from products with known driver issues but as we all know what's a problem for someone never gets noticed by others.
Also, would something like this work in place of it?

I was actually going to post that "this looks promising" and link to the dayton mic.

Re: What would be a reasonable cost solution to EQ?
It appears that there are some instructions on amazon for how to make it work on windows 7. I appreciate the quick response!
*as in the preamp you suggested, i just ordered it but its on backorder so I expect ~ 2 weeks.

Re: What would be a reasonable cost solution to EQ?
It wont work with a proper measurement mic as it doesnt provide phantom power.. I use the Blue ICICLE with my mac and there are no driver problems.. I used it with a windows 7 pc aswell without any hickups..MissileCrisis wrote:Looks brilliant, Except the usb/xlr part, did you have any issues with drivers?

If you're really serious about the "buy once, cry once" then go here: Rational Acoustics to get all sorts of very nice measurement equipmentMissileCrisis wrote:Thanks for the 2c, I'll try my luck at it .

Considering my budget, your first suggestion is exactly what I need. Thanks again.

Re: What would be a reasonable cost solution to EQ?
Just got the mic/preamp thing. One question, why is it reading ~150 dB and a bunch of hogwash (i think i messed up the calibration levels or something). Any REW resources would be greatly appreciated as that is the program I am determined to learn but as of yet haven't (windows works fine with it).

That would be why.MissileCrisis wrote:J (i think i messed up the calibration levels or something). .
99% of the time, things that aren't already being done aren't being done because they don't work. The other 1% is split evenly between fools and geniuses.

After messing around with REW, I now know how to use it to eq. Took a while to figure out but now I'm a happy camper.
