Behringer ECM8000 versus DBX RTA-M

EQ guys are using on their cabs/systems. A good starting place if you don't have your own RTA.

Behringer ECM8000 versus DBX RTA-M

#1 Post by Charles Jenkinson »

Can the Behringer ECM8000 measurement mic be used with a DRPA+ instead of the DBX RTA-M measurement mic? i.e. Same voltage (i.e. just phantom power), similar linearity, etc.? There’s a £70 saving in the UK on the Behringer over the DBX mic, which represents an overall 15% saving when kitting up with a DRPA+ to do RTA.
2xJ12L (3012HO) switchable/melded
2xT30

Yes, that is the measurement mic that I use with my DRPA+
My initials are in the view finder of every camcorder (REC)

Well, I've been blessed! I was checking pricing last Thursday evening (again!), and digital village had 'alternative products' at the bottom of the screen. I couldn't believe my eyes - a drpa+ with FREE rta-m!, ...and yes, it was priced as the equivalent of free. The drpa+ was also the cheapest UK price I had seen. I discussed with my wife, ...and here they are on the kitchen table. I am one happy boy.

Excelent Charles,
Another box ticked :)
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Now that you have this, i HIGHLY recommend (as in i'm forcing you  ) downloading REW software and run some graphs. Really revealing of what's really going on with your system.
Built:6 t39, t18, 4 Jack10, 2 autotuba, 2 SLA,2 wedge, 2 TT, 2 Tritrix, curved sla, 2 otop212, 2 SLA pros, Ported 8" sub, 2 ported 210, dual ported 8" sub

Ok. I'd be more than happy to do that in the fullness of time. Tell me, can you hear the the differences in system tuning you might make as a result of using REW compared with a drpa or deq rta? The DBX forum say only use auto-EQ results for frequency bands enclosed by 170 to 700 Hz; do the rest with ears. I dont know about most, but my ears are not golden.

The biggest problem was always the sub. With rta, I couldn't really use the parametric eq which has solved the major problems I would encounter. So after measuring with sweeps I could see what was exactly going on and correct it accordingly. So to answer your question, yes I could hear the difference. But without sweeps, the auto rta does a damn good job.
