Wi so you had the access door open all night on the DVC? Do you think it could have coped with the power all night if it was closed?

If I had put the access cover on, I bet it would have fried.

It sounds like you pushed it hard, 950 watts. You think the driver was reaching a mechanical failure at all then or just electrical overload? I'm just wondering if extra cooling trumps rear chamber damping/protection. What you think? Drey

What about using some copper stick-on heat sinks? Like these: http://www.xoxide.com/enzotech-bmr-c1.htmlJust use some thermal adhesive, peel of the label on the driver and put them there. They're only 14mm (1 3/4") tall. Do you have that much clearance? Edit: They also make some that are low profile, 9mm (9/16")

Re: Wi's Driver Showdown, JL 13w1v2 vs. Dayton 15" DVC in 24"THT
No mechanical failure, just alot of heat. Bill says that really anything over 500w is a waste anyway. I kinda wanted to see how much abuse the thing could take. If I ran a pair of DVCs off one FTX te power levels would match a bit better, but the prob with that is getting the right impedance.
One thing that was nice about having the covers off is I could monitor the status as the night went on, every once in a while I popped in the corner to check and see how toasty things were. The only time I noticed an abnormally warm condition was when I was breaking down after my set. The rest of the night they ran warm but not hot.
Hadn't thought about heat sinks, but again this was hopefully a one time worst case scenario. I wanted to push the driver as hard as I could to see what would happen before I trust them in the next phase of my rig.

I like these DVCs. I was excited about the Lab 15 mistakenly thinking it would handle more power, not realising the spec on the PE website for the DVC was for each coil, with a 600w RMS total for both voice coils being the same as the Lab. Series wiring the VCs for a 16ohm load per driver means more subs off one amp. Plus they are cheaper. I'm nearly sold.

If it survived a 3am drunk set from me, they get my endorsement. Lol

lmao. Do you're drunk sets end up with the lows slammed as close to 6oclock as the knob will allow when you get excited?

Nah bass only gets the 1 or 2 oclock treatment. What I tend to do is say "hey the system has been running fine all night, why not open up the limiters a cpl db!"

Seems the DVC didn't fare as well as I thought. Spider is ripped and she kicks the Ashly amps into protection now. Worked all night till I unhooked it, then sat for a couple of days before I noticed it today. So needless to say the DVC can run at 1kw for only one night. I'll get pics and stuff up in the next few days. Glad there is a 5-yr warranty.

If you had more of your cabs loaded with the DVC, would you run them as hard as you did the one?

I was over at Wi's this evening and even though the spider was ripped it was still working as he set up a couple to demo them for me. My pant legs were shaking very impressive, I'll let him tell the rest
