Speakon adaptor
Speakon adaptor
Now that we can post pictures, I wanted to share this handy adaptor I've built a few of.
I soldered and press fitted three of the 1/4 and speakon connectors into a nylon lawn sprinkler system tee.
Now I can plug a mix of cables together depending on what I wish to connect, extend, or whatever.

Yes, inquiring minds want to know.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.
Re: Speakon adaptor
Take the connector with you to the store to confirm that it can be press fitted into a 3/4" or 1" Nylon (not PVC!) Tee - the type used for lawn sprinkler systems, etc. I think it is 3/4 standard pipe thread, but it could be 1".
A simple cabinet clamp can be used to press fit the Speakon into the tee after the internal soldering is completed. No additional glues or conectors should be needed.
I split a few of the PVC tees before I figured out that nylon is soft enough to grip the connector, but not split it. The speakons are $3, the Nylon tee is $5, wire is what I had available. They have paid for themselves already.
Improvements / suggestions are encouraged.

Ok. It sounds like the Speakons are in the T pretty snug. Can they be removed in case you need to replace one?
If not, what about going one size larger and using small screws to hold them in place? The hexagonal face of the T looks like it provides enough material for some short #4 sheet metal screws. Not sure if the next size up would allow 2 screws to gain purchase, maybe too big?
Re: Speakon adaptor
I've never had to replace one. But I have pulled a green Speakon receptacle back out without damaging anything, after breaking a solder joint upon assembly. They are set up for PCB mounts, and don't have the large solder tab that the other black receptacles have.Tim A wrote:Can they be removed in case you need to replace one?
That would work.Tim A wrote:If not, what about going one size larger and using small screws to hold them in place? I've been using speakons since they came out and I've never had one fail

Re: Speakon adaptor
I went looking for some nylon tees the other day, and neither HD or Lowe's had them. I took a speakon with me to see if it would fit in the end of a PVC 3/4" tee, and it was just a hair too big. If I forced it, either the PVC or the connector would crack.
Any ideas where else to look?

I used the Nylon for lawn sprinkler systems. HD had it in my local store.David Carter wrote: Any ideas where else to look?

it is a T mm how about using a cross and place a series parallel switch on the extra side???
There is a very thin line between fail and success. It is very thin so, why are you scared???

Re: Speakon adaptor
David, I've got the recipe for you. I couldn't find the nylon T's at HD or Lowes either. So I headed to the plumbing aisle and picked up T's and 1" to 3/4" couplers. I cut the 3/4" part of the coupler off flush, and used a dremel to make the hole big enough to fit the speakon connector. The 1" part of the coupler gets plummers glue and slid onto the T. Here's a picture, If you have any questions just let me know.

I'd be REALLY tempted to pot those with epoxy.

Re: Speakon adaptor
Is there enough room in there to add binding posts on the flat side of the t? Aside from accepting banana connectors it would add bare-wire connections for a real emergency fix.
