Edge Roundover Techniques

#1 Post by ripNdeb »

What size router bit are you using to round over the edges of your cabs built with 1/2" material? What's your technique for something like the top or bottom front edge of a T39/48 where there is nothing for the roller guide to follow?
2X OTop 112, 3012HO, melded - 2X T39, 27", Lab 12 - XF 212 - 4 DR250, 2 melded, 2 straight
2 20" T39 3012LF - WH10 - WH8 - in the shop - 2 more 20" T39s

3/8 looks best on 1/2 material.

always roundover from the top of the material whos edge you are rounding. doing it this way will prevent chipout from the router bit.

If it wasn't clear about the mouths of T39's and 48's from what sine143 explained.

Same technique applies, set them flat on their back and route away. You just have to be real careful and steady as the router base has nothing to ride on but that edge. This goes for any open ends (think Otops/Jacks back panel area, etc.)

It's not tough if you pay attention and take it slow.

I agree with 3/8" bit for edges, but find using a 1/2" bit on the corners helps best fit with large corners one tends to use on subs...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Screw a guide board to the cab for the router base to follow.

I've never had to do that but, makes good sense!

3/8" is the standard for the plastic stacking corners too (although they'd work with 1/2", but wouldn't fully contact at the corner).

Or create an offset base for your router from 3/8" perspex - v. handy for other jobs too... any sort of profile work and with a few extra holes, good for a small circle jig also:
