AT installed! about time......

#1 Post by Scott Brochu »

Many husband duties took first over this install so when I finally put the dash back together and sat in the car to listen, it was a relief.

I had my doughts at first but with the trust of the design and what I read about other builds, I decided to go for it.
I got a Pioneer head unit, Pyle 4x6's in the doors and 3.5's in the rear. I also picked up a Kicker amp 2 channel, Bridged at mono for 100 watts. I feel I had more than enough power.

I set the amps X to low, and the head unit X over to 100hz. (I don't know what to set the high pass filter too, I think 80 or 63?).
I mounted the amp on the sub which might of been a bad idea due to the sub vibrating so much it might rattle things loose and cause a malfunction.
I set the bass boost and gain on the amp to all the way down to start.
The clarity of this box is unreal. It sounds just as good in the car as it does in the house but lower. Probably the tight quarters in the trunk.
I had to set it in side to side due to the small space in the trunk of a VW Cabriolet. (pics tonight, wife took the car to work  I WAS GOING TO!).

I can't see anyone wanting more bass than this especially in a car this small.
I did it mostly to help sell some this summer as my wife drives around she can pass out biz cards.

I like the bass sound but do not like the rattling of things in the body of the car........standing outside the car sounds a bit like a hum. But this is not meant to be listen to outside the car, getting in is like heaven to the ears with all levels of sound being heard.

I recommend building this sub if you want that big sound and don't want to pay the big price for a couple 12" speakers cause I feel this compares.

For an 8" driver I give it a 10 :P She agrees

OK here we go!

Small car I know. Thats why my wife drives it.

It sounds so rich and has big bass.
Too much for me, but for sales......
I have the amp turned way down and the bass booster turned off. With that off I still bet it would beat a 12" front loaded car sub.

The thing I like about this one is that unlike the front loaded car subs, you don't have to be careful of breaking a speaker cone. It is all self contained in it's own little box.
Though this car is small and makes the box look big.

What I have found out about this sub is that it is louder inside the car than out. You can feel it outside but not hear it as much as the cars that come down the road thumping.
Not that I want that but how does that figure??

I have been messing with the x over and came to the conclusion that indeed 100 is the best and if I want to feel it more than 50 or 63 which are the preset x over points.

I still can't get over the clean bass and the drums when I play a rush cd

people can't believe that there is only an 8 inside.
The only thing that sucks is that I have to open the box up to prove it to people cause they can't believe it. :P

I think I am going to mess with a wider box with the same 8 in it.
SO the wider it goes the lower or louder? or both?

Maybe you need to replace the wooden access cover with plexiglass, acrylic, or something like that. That way, people can see it without you having to break the seal.

Wider = Louder.
The path length is what determines how low it gets, and that length is fixed.

If you double with width, you should double the driver count.
There is a point where you can be "too wide" for the designed driver. Then you add a 2nd driver.

AT is designed to be optimal in a vehicle.
You would go 2x wide with a 2nd driver because you need more noise than 1x.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

You'll need 3/8" at least for the AT so that it won't flex like mad, and that stuff gets really pricey. But where the shields are concerned flexing isn't an issue. Strength is, so 1/4" is necessary for a frame less shield. That's not cheap either, but if you frame it 1/8" will do it.

THnaks Bill, almost missed me on that one. Headed out the door and thought I'd check in one more time.
I am going to frame I think, But at least I have something to go by.

Just out of curiosity, could you sandwich 3-4 layers of 1/8" instead of getting the really thick stuff? You wouldn't want to put any adhesive in the center of the panels or it would make it less see-through (which it probably will be anyways just by virtue of having multiple layers), but could you glue the layers together around the perimeter to get a thicker panel or would it still flex too much?

I suspect you'd get vibrations of the layers.

WOW! HD sells 1/4" 30-48" for like 60 something bucks and they don't have 1/8" they only have 3/32" 24"x48" which I almost bought for 25 bucks. I would need at least 2 sheets up front and 2 on each side. SO at least 6 sheets than frame it and hope to hell the wind don't blow

Remember that the shields only have to cover the line of sight plus maybe a foot between the drum heads and the rest of the band's ears, so they don't have to go to the floor.

But isn't that a big sail? How would one secure it to the floor?

 :wall:

The only things I have ever seen is where at least 5' tall from the floor.

I just watched the country music something the other night on tv and it was all live outside and they all had (or most of them) drum shields, but they went to the floor.
So I am
