BOOM,BOOM...gone..! AutoTuba Review

#1 Post by Jeff Beaird »

WOW..! :D I just got back from test driving my first completed BFM project(Auto Tuba). I removed my bulky 2-12 sealed box and slid in the AT. Hooked up the speaker wires and took off. I enjoyed myself so much , I had to make 2 trips because I got carried away with playing different CD's and tweeking the amp 10 different ways that I forgot to stop at the Post Office...
Life never sounded soooo good!
Man... what have I been doing? I definitely been going the wrong way. I've been building custom car stereo sub systems w/15's,12's,10's you name it. Ya,I've been pushin' a lot of air and making a lot of noise!!! But what a reality check, this little box w/MCM 8 in it.
I looked in the mirror while I was driving and I had this grin from ear to ear. HELL , I'm still smiling! :)
THANK YOU, MR. FITZMAURICE... THANK YOU , THANK YOU!!!

I wish 7-11 sold plywood... I'd start another one tonight!
If you can imagine it, I can build it..!

If I can get a loudspeaker system to sound like a pair of Soundmagic E10 in ear headphones I will be very happy indeed!
@Timpbizkit: And with your last sentence, do you mean those headphones are a standard for quality sound or are you saying you will be happy with anything over those Soundmagics?

Apples & oranges...

If you stick to headphones, I'm sure everyone on this forum will be a lot happier too.

Holy five year thread bump Batman! :o You might look into starting a new review thread when you finish the AT, instead of bumping old ones. :noob:

I've thrown you a few bones. How about setting to with the screwdriver and leave the noisemaking to the sub.

I made the mistake of dragging up a thread that was 6 months old when I got here. Apparently when it's done and dusted for everyone else it's of no use any more.
Still, I think that pulling up a much older thread (like a 5 year old one) has to lead one to consider relevance. There may have been 5 build revisions of the cab initially being discussed in that time.
The same can be said about reviews. Which version of the cab was the review for, and is that still relevant?
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

I haven't heard of any of the models getting worse with revisions. The newer versions can be considered at least as good, often better than the older. Still seems relevant to me. YMMV

Anton,
Yes, you're right, revisions are better than the preceding version. Otherwise they wouldn't happen, in Bill's case anyway.
I didn't say anything about revisions getting worse.

Say you're new here and decide to build X cab. You want to read a review of that cab. You're not privy to all the changes that have been made with multiple revisions. And the plans you buy are for the latest revision, so that's what you want to read a review about.
I would find a 5 year old review relevant if it was the only review in existence of the cab X I was trying to decide on, and no other more recent review was available. That is not likely to be the case.
If you couldn't find a review on the the most recent cab X version, the next most relevant one would be from a review on the immediately preceding version. Degrees of relevance if you like.

I did say "consider" relevance...

When I was new to this forum I bought a driver before I read the plans :cussing: based on a review from an old thread. I didn't realise that revisions had took place until I tried to fit said driver in the cab. It didn't fit :( . I can see where bringing up old threads may confuse newbies as it did to me.
Built:
17" width 10" driver Autotuba
2 x 29" width dual Lab12 Tuba60
6 x DR250 2510/asd1001
In progress:
2 x DR250 2510/asd1001
For best results, point the loud end of the array towards the audience

Fair points and well made, Grant and Corona. Seems to me there is something to be said for both sides.
