W8 Flat Array - Gig Tested at last!

#1 Post by MarcBass »

Finally ran my new W8 flat tweeter's at a gig and love them!!

These guys are running delta pro 8's. The tweeters are wired all series. Bill's description indicates the flat tweeter set-up is preferred for "small" stages. I have been running a pair of Fane loaded, melded array W8's for a while now. While quite happy with the melded array I have always wondered if the flat array would work better for small stages.

The desk, processors, amps, gain structure etc were the same as for the melded W8's except for a different EQ on the dBx driverack.

First impressions: Struth! these things are loud!! I was mixing from the side of the stage. The foldback I was getting, from way outside the throw was clearer and perceived as louder than the last time at this venue with melded W8's. The drummer, who relies on wired IEM even commented on the clarity of foldback wedges at the back of the stage. He actually used the spill from the W8's for a couple of songs when a blues harp player unexpectedly blue a few numbers through the main vocal mic!

Foldback for this 4 piece band carries vocals only. 2 wedges are used at the front of the stage competing with 2 guitars a bass and a drum kit.

The W8's weigh in at 12.1 kg, 1.3 kg heavier than my melded array W8's. (I put the weight difference down to the difference between the Delta Pro and the Fane.

Good to hear the WH8's are up and running well!

Can you simply make some adapter/reducer plates for the 10's?
Or do you reckon you need to cut a new baffle?
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

The 2*12 is a bass guitar bin I built back in the 80's. It's more like a 2*12 Simplex. Which is what I will most likely end up doing. Pop the baffle out and replace with a Simplex design baffle. Seal the box well from the inside and seal a new back on. It's really more sentimental value than a serious bass bin.

Most likely that project will be shelved and I'll build 2 or 4 more T39's and 2 more OT12's to finish off the outdoor rig! (Have 4 3012LF's sitting here and 2 melded arrays from a DR200)
