OT12's without subs... WAIT!! WHAT??

#1 Post by djtecthreat »

Long winded ramble warning...

Yeah I did the unthinkable yesterday.

Everything full range was out and I didn't feel like dragging out subs for a family cookout (my girlfriend's). I took a big 'ole risk and I brought out 4x OT12's. (all of mine are loaded with Beta12's) 2 with Dayton Ellipticals (wide dispersion) and 2 with the Goldwood 500's (narrow dispersion). and 4 speaker stands.

I set the 2 elliptical loaded cabs at the back side of the pool, 30 feet apart (or so) firing over the pool towards the back of the house (where bar, food, people, etc.. were).

One I fired off into the 2 - 3 acres of yard, where they were playing bocce ball and volley ball, there was a horse shoe pit out there too. (Approx. 300-400 feet away from the speaker)

The last one was aimed off at the fire pit where there was a small bonfire going on.

I ran the 2 near field off my PLX1104, and the 2 narrow dispersion off my PLX1804. Behringer DCX2496 doing the processing. No EQ at all, ran them flat with a HPF @ 50HZ. I then boosted everything from 70hz to 120hz about 12db. Music source was my Macbook running serato, SL1, and a small 6 channel Peavey mic board.

I know, I know what the eff was I doing right? I hard limited them at 25V and the hit play on a playlist filled with 50's sockhop stuff, classic rock, disco, 80's, 90's, and a bunch of newer stuff for later. Set the volume and wandered off to frolic and enjoy my self (no, I'm not djing or anything like that).

Sound was great. Honestly great. It didn't have much low end presence (duh, they're tops). But it was there enough. The kick was great like usual, the older 50's and 60's music had great bass because it was much higher in the frequency range. Newer stuff left a little to be desired, but nothing unpleasant by any means.

The deck (75 feet away) where the speakers behind the pool were aimed at had rumbled and vibrated, you could hear the bass lines being played. It was all I could ask for from these speakers. Vocal clarity was pretty unreal. I'm used to these parties where the music is struggling and as soon as you walk away from the speakers, the music is faded and muffled. I took a walk a 1/2 mile down the road in 1 direction and could hear all the words to what was playing. In the house, or barn was no different. People said they could hear us coming down the road in their cars. Meanwhile, the music was honestly just above conversation level at the party.

This is a testament to how great the OT12's are. I didn't need to pump tons of power in to them to make up for poor efficiency, a dipped response, and terrible dispersion. In fact, I barely flickered the first light on the mixer. and I never really went over -30 on the channel fader. Everything else was @ 0.

Later we pumped the volume and it was a little ridiculous how loud 4 12's in cubes could get, people danced and had a good time and it was all I could expect and hope for from a small system like this.

I've only ever heard the OT12's with subs at events, so I was even MORE impressed with them yesterday given what they're capable of. I wouldn't advise this, and I'm certainly not going to make a habit of it, but it IS possible to run them sub-less and they still kick ass.

A couple pics attached.

LOL, I didnt even notice them until you pointed them out.

Anyway, want a real lazy set up? How 'bout two jacks not even on tripods but one on the floor with a pole and other mounted on top of that pole with a powered mixer and an ipod play list :noob:

By far one of my favorite setups. Need more bass? since it my powered mixer had separate channels with separate eq's on each, i would boost bass on the "sub" channel and boost highs on the "top" channel and make a single stack of a t39's and two jacks on top. Believe me, once people get drunk and into the dancing mood, they just want the music to keep going.
